Sean Avery and the Top 12 Hockey Penalty-Box Moments
Penalty-box antics may just be one of the most uniquely entertaining aspects of hockey. Infamous incidents involving Tie Domi, Sean Avery, Darcy Tucker and Doug Gilmour have all made video highlight reels.
Throughout the years, we've seen players throw things, break cameras, fight each other and even fight fans.
Amongst the ridiculous things done over the years, which of those crack the top 12?
Phil Esposito Calls out Russian in 1972 Summit Series
1 of 12Phil Esposito was a prolific scorer in his time, and he was an instrumental part of Team Canada in the 1972 Summit Series.
However, this moment in the penalty box is one of the most memorable of all time.
Sean Avery Throws More Than a Tantrum
2 of 12Sean Avery is notorious for letting his emotions get the best of him.
After receiving a penalty he apparently did not like, Avery threw a little more than a temper tantrum here, whipping two water bottles against the glass of the penalty box. Avery was fined for that little show, too.
Doug Gilmour Shatters Glass
3 of 12If there was one guy you didn't want to upset, it was feisty Doug Gilmour.
After a penalty he clearly didn't approve of, Gilmour slammed the penalty box door, shattering the glass. That's something we may never see again.
Fan Flashes Ben Eager in 2011 Playoffs
4 of 12In a quite bizarre event, a hometown fan flashed her breasts to an opposing team's player in the penalty box, which CBC happened to catch in their live broadcast.
Ben Eager of the San Jose Sharks was on the receiving end of this show during Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals.
Kip Brennan Fights Fan
5 of 12Fans, just a note to keep in mind. When an enforcer is in the penalty box, I wouldn't test his patience too much.
Kip Brennan of the Hershey Bears tried taking on a taunting fan during a break in play in this AHL contest against the Manchester Monarchs.
Avery and Tucker Dance Right out of the Box
6 of 12Sean Avery and Darcy Tucker had a heated warm-up scrum prior to the start of this game, instigated by Avery trash talking Toronto Maple Leafs' winger Jason Blake, as well as Tucker himself.
The two were serving penalties for an altercation already in this Nov. 10, 2007, contest at the Air Canada Centre, before this happened.
Straight out of the penalty box, Tucker trips up Avery, and then they settle it by dropping the gloves. That's part of what makes hockey so glorious: the conflict resolution system.
ECHL Ironic Brawling
7 of 12It seems all that's separating these two penalty boxes is a scorekeeper's table, clearly not enough for a couple of heated hockey teams.
In this ECHL contest, Jeff Woriton takes exception to the opposing team's mouth, and runs over to start a four-man, tag-team brawl in the penalty boxes.
But the best part of it all is the Louisiana Physical Therapy ad on the boards in front of the box. I'm guessing they got their money's worth from that ad.
Vancouver Canucks' Green Men
8 of 12It doesn't get much better than the Green Men in Vancouver.
Whether it be taunting Mike Fisher with a Carrie Underwood cutout in a Canucks jersey, or throwing waffles in the air next to a Toronto Maple Leafs player, the Green Men are always good for a solid laugh.
Fan Attacks Player out of Nowhere
9 of 12Seemingly out of nowhere, a fan dashes in to attack Matt Vaslie of the Eugene Generals. It seems he did the Seattle Totems' Eric English a favor there, who can be seen chirping with Vaslie before Vaslie steps into the penalty box..
The Reason Why Penalty Boxes Are Now Separated
10 of 12This classic highlight comes courtesy of a 1991-92 IHL season contest between San Diego and Milwaukee.
Shawn Antoski couldn't take any more lip from Steve Martinson, nor he could he wait two minutes to settle it, apparently, as Antoski climbed over to Martinson's side to fight right then and there.
Tightly-Packed OHL Brawl
11 of 12In a game from Jan. 15, 1999, between the Oshawa Generals and London Knights, it wasn't just the crowd filled to capacity. The penalty boxes were stuffed, too, which is known by any hockey fan to mean one of two things: the disaster is being averted, or it's being initiated.
In this case, both London and Oshawa players are chirping back and forth until London's Dan Jancevski jumps over the boards to try and get at an Oshawa player.
The referees had to jump on the boards to help break it up, and security was quick to help extinguish the brawl, too, but what a sight.
Tie Domi Fights Fan
12 of 12Arguably the most memorable of penalty box moments, Tie Domi of the Toronto Maple Leafs took on a Philadelphia Flyers fan who didn't take too kindly to Domi's antics.
After some smack talk from the fans, Domi turns around and comically squirts them with a water bottle. One fan came after Domi, ended up breaking the glass, and fell into the penalty box, where Domi had his way with him before the referees and security broke things up.
It's probably one of the most bizarre moments, too, since things like this don't happen all too often in the NHL.
