The 10 Strangest Knockouts in Boxing History (With Video)

Mick AkersNov 17, 2011

The knockout is the most exciting display of power in all of sports, but sometimes we see KOs that are as strange as they are devastating.

From first-punch knockouts, to chicken dances after and everything in between, sometimes the circumstances surrounding the KO are just as entertaining as the actual knockout itself.

Here are the 10 strangest knockouts in boxing history that will leave you wondering: what the heck just happened?

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortiz

1 of 10

The latest and strangest knockout in boxing came this past September when Floyd Mayweather gave Victor Ortiz the knockout of his career as Ortiz broke the cardinal rule in boxing: protect yourself at all times.

After a blatant headbutt to Mayweather's chin, the referee stopped the action to take away one point from Ortiz. After Ortiz gave Mayweather a kiss on the cheek and a hug, the referee brought the two fighters back together and called time in when the KO blow happened.

Some call it a cheap shot, others call it a grave mistake on Ortiz's part for not defending himself once the ref called time in and leaving himself wide open for a combo that gave Mayweather an out-of-the-ordinary KO win.

Note: KO comes at the 7:34 mark of the video.

Mike Tyson vs. Trevor Berbick

2 of 10

Mike Tyson was a monster in the ring back in the late '80's and early '90's, and his knockout power rivals that of anyone who has ever stepped into the ring.

Tyson's KO of Trevor Berbick in 1986 didn't appear to be all that powerful, but still sent Berbick into la-la land and gave Tyson his first heavyweight title in the process.

After missing a huge uppercut, Tyson landed an average left hook to the forehead of Berbick sending him crashing to the canvas.

Berbick had noodle legs as he tried to get up but he was completely out of it, from such an average-looking blow which definitely makes this a very strange KO.

Note: KO comes at the 6:49 mark of the video clip.

Oliver McCall vs. Henry Akinguande

3 of 10

Oliver McCall knocked out Henry Akinguande with two soft-looking punches leaving everyone scratching their heads as to what just happened.

Akinguande got hit with two normal-looking shots, but fell to the canvas like he was hit by the hardest punch ever and even bounced when he initially hit the ground.

Note: KO comes at the :05 second mark of the video clip.

Roy Jones Jr. vs. Art Serwano

4 of 10

In 1992, Roy Jones Jr. was still on the rise and gave us a strange knockout against Art Serwano in his 17th fight as a pro.

Jones landed a right to the side of Serwano's head, sending him down to the canvas, landing on the side of his body.

I can't recall a KO quite like this where the boxer being knocked out just falls over sideways, instead of collapsing straight to the floor.

Note: KO comes at the 3:51 mark of the video clip.

Sven Ottke vs. Anthony Mundine

5 of 10

Sven Ottke knocked out a rising star in Anthony Mundine with a slight right hook that landed in an awkward way which twisted Mundine's head sideways and had him crashing to the canvas seconds later in their 2001 bout.

The fight was for Ottke's IBF Super Middleweight crown and many feel that Mundine was in over his head taking on a title-holding fighter so early in his career.

Note: KO comes at 3:15 of the video clip.

Robbie Peden vs. Nate Campbell

6 of 10

In their 2004 fight, Robbie Pedan made Nate Campbell pay for his blatant disrespect for his power, knocking out Campbell after he stood there unguarded, basically daring Pedan to give him his best shot.

Campbell was going to coast to an easy victory and let overconfidence take over and ultimately lost the fight due to being too cocky.

Note: KO comes at the :54 second mark of the video clip.

Ashley Sexton vs. Usman Ahmed

7 of 10

Definitely falling in the strange category is Ashley Sexton's KO of Usman Ahmed in their 2010 bout.

Sexton knocked out Ahmed with a vicious right hook after Ahmed's highly annoying dancing ring entrance and disgusting show of cockiness before the two fighters threw a single punch.

In all Ahmed got what was coming to him, as he didn't have the skill to back up up the side show he put on before the fight.

Note: KO comes at the 1:57 point of the video clip.

Vincent Pettway vs. Simon Brown

8 of 10

In 1995 Vincent Pettway gave us the strangest KO of that year, when he knocked out Simon Brown and Brown continued to punch while he was out cold, flat on his back, in their IBF light middle weight title bout.

I guess fighters instinct to keep their guard up at all times even comes into play as they lay unconscious on the ground after a vicious blow.

Note: KO comes at the :04 second mark of the video clip.

Zab Judah vs. Kasta Tsyzu

9 of 10

In their 2001 fight, Kostya Tszyu knocked Zab Judah silly, giving the boxing fans one of the weirdest reactions to a KO ever.

After dropping like a tree that had been chopped down, Judah popped right back up, did a little dance and looked to tell the ref something, and fell right back down before being called out by the referee.

Judah has delivered his fair share of KOs in his career, but the time he was knocked out by Tszyu will go down as one of the strangest KOs in history.

Note: KO comes at the :08 second mark of the video clip.

Danny Green vs. Paul Briggs

10 of 10

In what has to be the strangest KO I have ever seen, Danny Green lands a very slight blow to the forehead of Paul Briggs, knocking him out in 29 seconds of the first round of their 2010 fight.

Though there were some concerns with Briggs' health, the KO is still a mystery and even warranted a police investigation.

A very strange situation overall definitely puts this KO on top of the strangest ever list.

Note: Sorry for the quality of the video, it was the best I could find. The KO comes at the 39-second mark of the video clip.
