Ron JohnsonDec 11, 2008

"Say goodbye to the bad guy. Last time you'll ever see a bad guy like me." Tony Montana, Scarface

The WWE has many faces. Some are good. Some are bad. And some are just downright evil. This year, we honor those who believe that's it's good to be bad.

Here are the nominees for the 2008 Heel of the Year.

WRESTLING: OCT 02 AEW Dynamite/Rampage Pittsburgh
Monday Night RAW

#1) Chris Jericho, RAW

When Jericho returned last November, he had only one intention in mind: To Save Us From Randy Orton. That was before he realized that he would be better as a heel than a face. Thanks to the actions of Shawn Michaels, Jericho found his true potential.

On a taping of RAW after One Night Stand, Jericho became a true heel when he slammed HBK's face into the Jeritron 5000, sending shards of glass into the eye of Michaels. But Jericho got the title of true heel at Unforgiven. After a backstage assault excluded CM Punk from defending the championship, Jericho was brought in to take his place. After pulling an Edge-like move, Jericho walked in battered and bruised from his war with Michaels earlier in the night, and walked out the new World Heavyweight Champion.

Since then, Jericho has defeated Punk and Batista inside a steel cage, and defeated Michaels in his own patented match, the Ladder Match. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to defeat Stone Cold Steve Austin or John Cena. This Sunday, he gets a chance to win the gold one more time and finish as World Champion for 2008. But even though he was named Superstar of the Year by Stephanie McMahon, will the Nation feel the same way as Heel of the Year?

#2) Kurt Angle, TNA

Words cannot describe the amount of heat that Kurt Angle has gotten this year. He started the year as TNA World Heavyweight Champion. He ends it with a chance to destroy TNA in one final match.

He has taken TNA by storm and has damaged everyone in the process. From Samoa Joe to AJ Styles, no one has been safe from the Olympic Champion...not even his own wife, Karen. The reason that you don't see The Angles together as much is because Kurt's storyline had him destroying his marriage one day at a time.

Lately, Angle has aligned himself with four former World Champions and has created The Main Event Mafia. It's too early to say how long Angle's reign of terror will continue, but after this past Sunday's Final Resolution, we do know one thing: At Genesis, Jeff Jarrett will have to face a highly motivated Angle for possibly possession of TNA. Angle has decimated everyone who has crossed him over the past few months. But is he 2008 Heel of the Year?

#3) Big Show, SmackDown

While Vickie was making babies with Edge, Big Show was making severe noise when he returned earlier this year. The World's Largest Athlete made his unprecedented return to WWE at No Way Out following Rey Mysterio's match. What followed was a straight up mugging of the high flyer as Show went down to intimidate the smaller superstar.

In the process of his intimidation, Big Show met a new foe in the form of Boxing Champion Floyd "Money" Mayweather. The next night on RAW, Show showed the aftermath of the encounter as his nose was broken and his eye was black. He then apologized to Mayweather for the encounter...then he challenged him to a match at Wrestlemania.

The end result was Show getting his bell rung and getting knocked out by Mayweather. Over the next few months, Show turned face and fought The Great Khali for Giant supremacy in the WWE. After winning his match at One Night Stand, he earned the right to face Kane for the ECW Championship. Unfortunately, he fell short of his goal, and returned to SmackDown to start a war with The Undertaker. Last week, he lost his final battle with The Deadman.

What's next for the World's Largest Athlete? A possible award for 2008 Heel of the Year, maybe?

#4) Kane, RAW

The Big Red Monster's reign of terror was mainly on ECW before the Draft. After he lost the ECW Championship to Mark Henry at Night of Champions, he changed his demeanor and became the Monster once again.

He then started to focus his attention on Rey Mysterio. Over the next few months, Kane and Mysterio were involved in several physical encounters that ended a few weeks ago with Rey getting the final nail in the coffin over Kane.

Since his war with Mysterio ended, Kane has been looking for new victims to hurt. But the WWE has left him in the boiler room instead. But his rivalry with Mysterio, and even Batista, may have given him enough ammunition to earn the title of Heel of the Year.

#5) Randy Orton, RAW

He hear voices in his head. They come to him; they understand. They talk to him. These are the words that lets us know that Randy Orton is coming down to prove his dominance. When Orton won the WWE Championship at No Mercy, it started the Age of Orton that left several victims in the process: Triple H, Chris Jericho, Jeff Hardy & John Cena.

But even when he lost the gold, and was left on the shelf with a broken collarbone, Orton came back with a vengeance and a new set of tattoos to match. Orton has returned to competition, and has picked up where he left off. But he has played the perfect heel/face since his return.

In other words, taking out Ted DiBiase and playing motivator to several young superstars has him becoming the next Triple H of RAW. Either way, the Legend Killer has returned with a vengeance, and it won't end without him becoming World Heavyweight Champion once again.

#6) Edge, SmackDown

You think you know him? Don't bank on it. Edge has been the epitome of heel this year. Thanks to his relationship with Vickie Guerrero, Edge found himself on top of the SmackDown Kingdom once again. He ended 2007 as the World Heavyweight Champion. Now he looks to end 2008 as the WWE Champion.

The Rated R Superstar has found himself busy this year. His crowning achievement was when he cheated on Guerrero with the wedding planner Alicia Fox and still ended up using her to regain the gold at Survivor Series. After taking a sabbatical following his match with Undertaker at Summerslam, he returned with a full blown Canadian beard and speared his way to the WWE Championship last month.

We have yet to see the two show that same chemistry they had before the Fox incident, but Edge is still the light of Vickie's eye. Yes, it's true: Love isn't blind; it's drunk and retarded. So did Edge do enough to get the votes of the Nation for 2008 Heel of the Year?
