Saints vs. Rams: 4 Halftime Adjustments St. Louis Must Make

Evan AdrianOct 30, 2011

OK, that went well.

Show of hands: who thought New Orleans would have zero points at the half? That's what I thought.

The Rams played stellar defense, Feeley made few mistakes and Steven Jackson was a monster in the first half as the Rams shut out the Saints en route to a 17-0 halftime lead.

Obviously, a three-point lead is far from safe against the Saints' explosive offense. Here's four keys for St. Louis to hang on for a huge upset victory.

1. Keep Feeding Steven Jackson- It’s no secret, S-Jax makes the Rams’ offense go. And go they did in the first half. Jackson managed 91 yards and a touchdown in the first half, and the Saints' defense almost looked afraid to stop him.

The Rams have to sustain long drives and keep the Saints’ offense off the field. And that's only going to happen with a heavy dose of Jackson in the second half.

2. Continue Bringing Pressure on Brees- The Rams have done a solid job bringing pressure on Brees. Seriously. Brees has been flustered in the pocket, and has been forced to throw short dumps to his backs. If St. Louis can continue to make Brees uncomfortable in the pocket, they’ve got a shot.

3. Better Protection for Feeley- Look, I don’t think any Rams fan is expecting too much from A.J. Feeley. But if Feeley has no time to operate, expectations fall through the floor. If St. Louis can buy him even a little time in the pocket, he's going to be able to sustain drives in the second half.

4. Keep Targeting Brandon Lloyd- There’s no doubt who St. Louis’ number one receiver is. After targeting Lloyd 12 times in his Rams’ debut last week, Feeley kept up the pace, looking his waynine times in the first half. And obviously, it's paid off big (four grabs for 33 yards and a score).

Expect a lot more looks for Lloyd in the second half.
