Its Good To Be Wood! Kerry Wood signed

Elliot SchallDec 10, 2008

The Cleveland Indians witnessed K-Rod sign a multi-year deal with Mets late Tuesday afternoon, and knew now that with the top closer in baseball signed so quick, they had to make a move. GM Mark Shapiro and Assistant GM Chris Antonetti looked for the alternative option, and decided to pursue another big name closer Kerry Wood.

Last off-season Shapiro and his crew sat back and did nothing, besides signing Jamie Carroll and Masa Kobayashi. Now signing Kerry Wood, who had 34 saves, 84 K's and only gave up three home runs, gives the Indians more money to spend. This money cold be used to sign an infielder such as Rafael Furcal or Orlando Hudson. If we would have signed K-Rod we probably wouldn't be in the same situation.

Two years ago Shapiro went out on a limb and signed closer Keith Foulke, which got many fans excited because he was a good closer who was well known around the league. A few days into spring training, Foulke began to feel pain in his arm and decided that he was gonna hang up his cleats and call it a career. Due to this event, Shapiro is being very careful and cautious with this journey for a new closer, and I think he made the right choice.

Kerry Wood has had some injury problems, but mostly when he was a starter. He now pitches less innings and likes being a closer more than a starter. With the less innings pitched, he throws harder and has more control, and because of this he has become a lights out closer.

Now with Cleveland its been a while since we have had a good closer. The names that come to mind when I hear Cleveland and closer are: Jose Mesa, Bob Whickman, John Rocker, Danny Baez, Joe Borowski, and etc. Each one of these guys have had good careers in the majors, but they have all have blown many many saves, and some have blown crucial World Series saves, not to mention any names (Jose Mesa), but I believe we have moved on since.

Good Job to Shapiro and all the Indians front office staff, lets hope this was a good move, and now thats do more and improve the infield!
