What Will Christian's Arrival Mean for the WWE?

Donnie B.Dec 10, 2008

Over the past few weeks, the main story in wrestling communities has been Christian Cage's rumored return to Stamford. The buzz that's been created should tell you one thing; Christian is a bona fide main eventer. And with the current environment of the WWE, his return couldn't be timed any better.

At first glance, the standing roster of "entertainers" in the WWE has your standard faces and heels. But there's a trend, not necessarily a new trend, of this persona dubbed the 'anti-hero', or in some cases, a 'tweener'.

Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, and Edge are perfect current examples. Though the idea behind the character is to be a heel and draw heat, these three wrestlers are very popular and clearly have loyal and vocal fans.

Why? In ring attributes, the ability to cut a strong promo, and carry out a storyline have put the anti-hero in the forefront of the mind of the avid wrestling fan.

Christian fits this mold perfectly. His microphone capabilities are far above par, and the man can flat out get it done in the squared circle. Now, all he needs a feud with an interesting and deep storyline. Looking at the title picture, champions and contenders, there's room for Cage to make an, ahem, impact.

One scenario that has been discussed and makes the most sense is for him to reunite with Edge and/or Tomko. If you combine the three into a stable of sorts, they could be dominate as there isn't a faction currently on Smackdown!. La Familia/Edge's Army is mostly dead.

With Orton leading The Legacy on Raw, as an anti-hero, look for them to be dominate. Why not duplicate the same on Smackdown? An Edge-Christian-Tomko alliance could cause a lot of damage, and pick up more fans.

Who would this new stable feud with? Easy answer. The Hardys. The history is there, with The Brood vs. The New Brood, the classic TLC matches, Edge and Matt Hardy's heated rivalry. Both Hardys' are extremely over at the moment.

Matt as ECW champion, and Jeff as a world champion in the waiting. Flash back around a decade, give or take, and what were these men fighting over? The tag team titles. Fast forward to 2008/2009. What could possibly these combatants be fighting over in the next year? The WORLD titles.

Some see the ECW championship as unimportant, but with Matt Hardy as the holder, it has gained a sense of respectability. Now there's really no one in ECW that has the drawing power of Matt. I think the WWE picked up on that, and now have Koslov coming to battle Hardy for that title.

Though the Moscow Mauler more than likely won't take the belt from Matt, it could galvanize Hardy as a major player. In Jeff's championship chase, it's not if, but when. Granted he stays on the straight and narrow.

The fans definitely want it to happen. And he would be the most over wrestler in the locker room with that piece of gold. Look for him to hold it a while, not unlike Cena's reign.

So what does all this lead to?

Imagine this, if you will, and stay with it. Both Hardys are holding their respective championships going into Royal Rumble. Edge, looking for another way to steal the belt, rigs the slotting to be entrant No. 30. The big toss-out goes on as normal, with one guy dominating, probably Triple H.

Wrestler after wrestler comes in and goes out, until we're left with say Matt Hardy, Triple H, Randy Orton, and No. 29 yet to come out. But at the signaled time, no one comes to the ring. After a few moments, the clock counts down to the arrival of Edge, at No. 30.

The battle continues, as Edge and Orton form a brief alliance and eliminate Trips. They turn their collective focus onto Matt, but when Randy isn't looking, Edge turns on RKO and tosses him out.

Matt Hardy and Edge. The last two fighters rekindle the old flames of hate and go at it. When all of a sudden, a debuting Christian comes out and down the ramp, the missing No. 29 entrant.

Edge and Christian beat down Matt, and Christian throws him out. Instead of fighting his old buddy, Cage jumps over and out, eliminating himself, and proceeds to destroy Matt on the outside.

So that makes Edge the No. 1 contender for Jeff's championship at Wrestlemania 25. And it also sets up Matt and Christian for the ECW title at the big pay-per-view. The build up for both matches would be tremendous.

It would give the ECW title a big boost. And in the process, make Christian finally a main eventer in the WWE, if they would put that belt on him. Creative could even involve the tag titles somehow, and wrap both feuds into one.

Look for Christian's push to closely resemble Jericho's when he came back. All indicators point to Cage staying around the top for a while.
