Dan BoldeOct 27, 2011

If you're a hockey fan and also enjoy the lighter side of life, this story's for you. A complete list of the NHL's most memorable bloopers and blunders of all time is the perfect way to get some humor into your daily hockey life.

You'll see jaw dropping missed hits, hilarious wipe outs, improbable goals, and yes, twirling goaltenders. So sit back, relax, and delight in viewing the 20 wackiest and most memorable bloopers and blunders of all time.

Florida Panthers Fans Throw Rats on the Ice

1 of 20

In memory of one of the most random objects every to be thrown onto NHL ice, Florida Panthers fans make this list.

Prior to the Panthers' home opener in 1996, forward Scott Mellanby killed a rat in the locker room. He scored two goals that same game, and the feat was dubbed a "rat trick."

Goaltender Ron Hextall Scores a Goal

2 of 20

It was the first of its kind and is still one of few. Not many NHL goalies have scored an NHL regular season goal. Philadelphia Flyers goalie Ron Hextall became the first to do it in 1986.

Steve Yzerman Kisses His Teammate

3 of 20

This is the first of several Red Wings clips that have made it on the list. If you've ever been to a sporting event, you know a thing or two about the "kiss cam" used on arena big screens during TV timeouts.

This one made it on air. Red Wings Brendan Shanahan and Martin LaPointe seem hesitant to smooch, so like the legendary captain he was, Steve Yzerman steps in and gets the job done.

Niclas Wallin Scores for the Other Team

4 of 20

We've seen videos just like this one: a delayed penalty and your team somehow gives up an unthinkable goal.

Here's another heart breaker courtesy of Carolina Hurricane Niclas Wallin.

Doug Gilmour Shatters the Glass

5 of 20

It's pretty obvious that former Montreal Canadien Doug Gilmour didn't agree with his penalty.

A solid and consistent player throughout his career, the aggressive Gilmour will also be remembered for famously shattering the penalty box glass during the NHL playoffs.

Dennis Wideman Loses an Edge

6 of 20

Skating in for a shootout attempt against the Chicago Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues defenseman Dennis Wideman looked to make his move—and then he went flying.

In one of the funniest shootout bloopers of all time, Wideman basically jukes himself out of his own scoring attempt and has no time to recover his skating edge. Wideman goes completely airborne and never gets his shot off.

Patrick Roy Shows His Ballet Skills

7 of 20

Before I conducted extensive research, I never knew this ridiculous clip existed.

It's an obvious penalty if you know hockey, but just watch. All-time great goalie Patrick Roy handles the puck, skates up to and then past center ice. It's completely insane.

Roy actually makes a few slick moves as well, including a jaw-dropping 360 juke.

Jamie Langenbrunner Scores from Center Ice

8 of 20

In a bitterly contested 1998 Western Conference Finals, the Dallas Stars proved they could get under Detroit goalie Chris Osgood's skin. They won Game 5 with this overtime goal from center ice by winger Jamie Langenbrunner.

The crowd goes nuts and so do the Stars players. The Wings would get the last laugh though and win the series the following game.

Fast forward to 6:40 to see the goal.

Sebastien Caron Lets in an Improbable Goal

9 of 20

Famous for some spectacular saves, Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Sebastien Caron is just as infamous for giving up this goal against the Washington Capitals.

The puck seemed to take a very weird bounce right before it reaches the net. Considering that is how these types of blunders occur, shouldn't these goalies be prepared for something like this to happen?

The short answer is yes.

Vesa Toskala Does His Best Caron Impression

10 of 20

In a video similar to Caron's, then Toronto Maple Leaf goaltender Vesa Toskala allows an even more improbable goal.

During a first period power play for Toronto, a cleared puck goes the length of the ice, takes a wild, unexpected bounce, and trickles right past the defenseless goaltender.

You can't do anything but feel bad for these guys.

Dion Phaneuf Wipes out Before a Fight

11 of 20

This video is just like the Dennis Wideman clip—another player loses his edge.

Calgary Flames defenseman and enforcer Dion Phaneuf gets checked into his own boards. As he prepares to take exception by starting a fight, Phaneuf completely flops, falling to the ice.

It's completely and utterly hilarious. Thanks, Dion.

Patrick Roy: The Statue of Liberty

12 of 20

All Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche fans remember this one. This Western Conference Finals series in 2002 lived up to its bidding as a full-on war. This clip is from Game 6 and the Avalanche were leading the series three games to two.

During the second period, Detroit fired upon the Colorado net and it seemed goaltender Patrick Roy had covered up the rebound. Roy lifted his catching glove to show the referees (and Colorado fans) his save. Little did he know, he'd dropped the puck.

Red Wing forward Brendan Shanahan was the first to notice and easily tapped the puck into the empty net. The goal was a turning point, as the embarrassed Roy and Avalanche lost Games 6 and 7.

The Wings rode their momentum all the way to their 10th Stanley Cup.

Ken Hitchcock Rips His Goaltender

13 of 20

This postgame interview was ten times more funny then the goal itself.

Philadelphia Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock gives his reaction to his goalie, Antero Nittymaki, giving up a lazy goal. Nittymaki was watching the Jumbo tron during the game, and gave up a goal from the red line.

Here are Hitchcock's ridiculous and hilarious comments.

Steve Sullivan: What Goes Around Comes Around

14 of 20

For those who don't believe in karma, watch this video.

Chicago Blackhawks forward Steve Sullivan gets his nose cut by a stick during the second period of a regular season game. On the road, Sullivan was subject to some ridicule by some raucous fans.

Well, as they say, "what goes around, comes around." Sullivan got the last laugh, as he eventually scored two goals, including the game-winner for the Blackhawks.

Later in the game that very same fan cut his nose after he was hit by a flying puck. Sullivan rushed to his side, only to dish back what he received: some ridicule.

Cal Clutterbuck Flies over the Boards

15 of 20

Big NHL hits are great. Big NHL misses are freaking hilarious. Minnesota Wild forward Cal Clutterbuck makes his money hitting people, but this time he got a little too excited.

Vancouver Canucks Alexandre Burrows picks up his head at the very last moment and he sees an oncoming train. Burrows spins out of the way at the expense of his teammates on the bench.

Clutterbuck flies into the Canucks' bench in one of the best missed hit vidoes known to date.

Tie Domi Mixes It Up with a Fan

16 of 20

Former Toronto forward Tie Domi is known as a brawler. One of the scrappiest, most aggressive players of all time, Domi made a name for himself for being a trash-talker and a fighter. This time, it's with a fan.

Obviously, some heckler got the best of Domi, as he sprays water onto him. The man comes crashing over the boards and into the penalty box.

Oilers Tie Game After Missed Empty-Net Chance

17 of 20

In this clip, you just have to see it to believe it. The Edmonton Oilers are losing 5-4 in a 2007 regular season matchup with the Dallas Stars. Late in the game, the Oilers pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker in hopes of typing the game up at five apiece.

Stars forward Patrick Stefan grabs the loose puck and has a chance for one of the easiest goals of all time. The puck takes an interesting bounce, and hops right over his stick as he attempts to put it in the empty net. Stefan falls, the Oilers rush back up the ice to tie and would go on to win the game.

Esa Tikkanen Misses an Open Net

18 of 20

Just like the Stefan clip in the previous slide, former Washington Capital Esa Tikkanen misses an open net—only with a goalie between the pipes.

The missed opportunity by Tikkanen set up Detroit's epic rally and eventual victory in Game 2 of the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals. Tikkanen makes a great move on goalie Chris Osgood only to completely miss the open net.

Steve Smith Ends the Oilers Season

19 of 20

Even in the conference semifinals crazy things can happen.

It was Game 7 between the Oilers and the Calgary Flames and the game was tied. The winner would move on to the conference finals and the loser would go home.

Edmonton defenseman Steve Smith made especially sure that it'd be his team packing their bags and going home at the end of the game, thanks to this improbable own goal.

Brodeur Score on Himself in the Finals

20 of 20

Although heralded as the single greatest goaltender of all time, Martin Brodeur is also remembered for committing one of the greatest blunders in Stanley Cup history.

In a series tied 1-1, against the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, the puck harmlessly makes its way to Brodeur. He eventually loses handle of his stick, the puck takes a weird bounce off of it, and trickles into the net through Brodeur's legs.

Anaheim eventually won that game in overtime, but not the series. The Devils took home the 2003 Stanley Cup in seven games.
