NFL Power Rankings: Which Teams Are Absolute Tops in the League?

Ryan PhillipsOct 26, 2011

The Green Bay Packers have cemented themselves as the NFL's best team. After seven weeks they are the league's only undefeated team and their 7-0 record means they have won 13 straight games dating back to last season.

The Packers are the defending Super Bowl champions and have played like it so far this season. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been the runaway favorite to win the NFL's MVP Award, as his quarterback rating of 125.7 is the best in the league and is nearly 21 points higher than second place (Tom Brady's is 104.8).

Rodgers has been flat-out unbelievable thus far and is leading an offense that is averaging 423.3 yards per game (fourth in the NFL) and scoring 32.9 points per game (second in the NFL). Though Green Bay has had close calls against the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings, I never really got a sense that they would lose any of those games.

The Packers just have a quiet confidence about them as if they know that eventually they will pull out a win. They have taken on the personality of their quarterback and just seem to be enjoying themselves and dominating with ease.

Right now there is no one close to touching Green Bay as the league's top team. The Packer offense looks unstoppable and their defense does just enough to get things done.

The New England Patriots are 5-1 and sit in a distant second to the Packers for top team honors. However they have the experience to reach the Super Bowl and if they face Green Bay there, anything can happen.

The Patriots boast the league's top offense, as they are averaging 474.5 yards per game. Brady is having another sensational season, and now that all of his targets seem to be healthy, the offense he leads just got that much scarier. New England is also averaging 30.8 points per game, good for fourth in the NFL.

While the Patriot defense ranks dead-last in the league in yards allowed (423.7 per game), the Patriots are actually improving on that side of the ball. Following their bye in Week 7, that trend should continue.

The bottom line is that the Patriots are led by one of the top two quarterbacks in football and have an explosive offense. With the amount of talent the defense has, I have to believe that unit will turn things around eventually. That makes New England the top team in the AFC on my board and puts them on track to face the Packers in the Super Bowl.
