WWE Vengeance 2011: WWE Ruins Worst-Kept Secret in the Rock's Return

Gabe ZaldivarOct 26, 2011

WWE had a banner day during Vengeance 2011. It would have been far better had they kept their trap shut about The Rock, his return and how he would join forces with John Cena

It seems incomprehensible that a movie star would agree to take part in what was one of the worst-kept secrets in pro wrestling history.

The fact is, most fans of Dwayne Johnson, the actor, knew what wrestling fans have known for months, The Rock would return to the ring. What we didn't know was that he would be teaming up with John Cena, a rival that adds a heavy dose of drama to a situation already rife with it.

During the Vengeance PPV, we were greeted with an epic teaser that showed us some of The Rock and Cena in action. It was Christmas Eve and we were ready to open our wrestling present.

What is so laughable is that WWE chose to make a dramatic announcement of this duo on Monday Night Raw. They clearly missed the boat.

This is a world where every fan pours over every little thing written to get some dose of rumor and tasty little innuendo.

Even if there had not been mentions of the team up before Monday's show, we would have known that The Rock and Cena would team up.

It made the teaser during Vengeance and the announcement by Cena fall flat. This could have been so much more if they would have silenced themselves from announcing something so epic.

Imagine if we had no idea about The Rock coming back to the ring, and had no idea that he would join forces with John Cena.

There would still be plenty of time for fans to order Survivor Series. There would be immense opportunity to flog this epic battle.

Instead, what could have been a masterful moment was a dud. We already knew this was coming. I still enjoyed the teaser during the PPV event, and was still drawn by Cena's announcement, but it could have been so much more.

A WWE that is based on presentation failed to get the most out of the biggest announcement of the year.
