Why New England Patriots Need Randy Moss, Not Terrell Owens

Ryan PhillipsOct 25, 2011

Terrell Owens had his big televised workout today, and the New England Patriots were reportedly set to be in attendance. If the Patriots want a semi-retired receiver, they shouldn't consider Owens to be the answer, they should look to a former team member, Randy Moss.

While Owens is out jogging routes against ghost defenses, Moss is sitting at home waiting for a phone call from a team in need of receiving help. While he has said he is fully retired, the 34-year-old Moss is younger than the 37-year-old Owens and is probably still a better option.

During his three-plus years in New England, Moss set the standard for receivers in the NFL. He was arguably the most dangerous player in the league. In 52 games with the Patriots, Moss racked up 259 catches for 3,904 yards and 50 touchdowns. Those are ridiculous numbers.

Moss was sent packing by New England last season because of his attitude, not his ability. If the Patriots were looking to add receiving depth, Moss would be the perfect guy to turn to, especially since he's familiar with the team's offense and has a good relationship with quarterback Tom Brady.

If New England is worried about personality clashes between Moss and the coaching staff, then even considering adding Owens is laughable. Neither guy has ever been a model citizen or teammate, and neither would really add anything positive to the locker room. If the team wants a talented receiver who might be a headache, you'd have to believe Moss would be the better choice.

The Patriots may just be doing their due diligence by attending Owens' workout, but if they are actually in need of another receiver, Moss would be an option that makes a whole lot more sense.
