WWE Divas Feud Prompts Reminder That Pro Wrestling Is Not Real Wrestling

Anthony SifuentesOct 24, 2011

The feud of Divas champion Beth Phoenix and Natalya versus Kelly Kelly and Eve Torres prompts a reminder that professional wrestling is not true wrestling.

Beth Phoenix and Natalya have been feuding with Kelly Kelly and Eve Torres since August.

After two unsuccessful attempts by Phoenix to defeat Kelly for the championship—at SummerSlam and Night of Champions—Phoenix finally did so at Hell in a Cell earlier this month.

Additionally, she successfully defended her title last night at Vengeance against Torres.

However long the feud between the two teams continues and where it leads—many suspect its time has come—is not the argument here.

Many feel the Divas title is where it deserves to be—in the hands of a woman who can actually wrestle.

Kelly Kelly's title reign was criticized by many, as several fans deemed her to be unworthy of being champion. She is seen by some as being purely eye candy and possessing limited wrestling ability.

While Eve Torres is viewed as being a better in-ring performer than Kelly, many would still have reservations of seeing another Torres title reign.

I personally prefer wrestling to be depicted as actual sport than as entertainment. I would rather see Divas in standard wrestling matches than in bra-and-panties matches.

At the same time, I saw no harm in having Kelly Kelly as the Divas champion.

So what if Kelly Kelly or Eve Torres are not great wrestlers?

Guess what? The acrobatic performances of Sin Cara, Rey Mysterio and AJ Styles, while fun and exciting to watch, are not actual wrestling.

The technical styles of Kurt Angle, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels are not real wrestling, either.

Real wrestling is Olympics, grappling-style wrestling.

Perhaps since pro wrestling is, has, and always will be male-dominated, female wrestlers cannot afford not to be seen as great wrestlers.

Kelly Kelly and Eve Torres are both tremendously athletic and give it their all in the ring.

While Kelly still performs Stink Faces on her opponents, it is clear she does her best to put on the best match possible.

Is that not what counts?

Having either Kelly or Torres as champion is different than having a non-wrestler like Vince McMahon, or an actual wrestler who has not proven to be a main-eventer yet, as champion.

I have no problem with John Cena, because he does his best and it shows.

I see the same with Kelly Kelly and Eve Torres. They are both really trying to widen their wrestling arsenal.

What I am saying is, we should not give up on wrestlers like John Cena or Kelly Kelly.
