WWE Vengeance 2011 Results: Fluke Victory Buries Alberto Del Rio Again

Before Vengeance, the one thing that I said needed to happen was Alberto Del Rio going over John Cena strong to make him look like a credible champion that the audience would be able to hate.

I even went so far as to praise the last man standing stipulation because that would allow Del Rio to bring out the evil side of his character that has been missing.

Now, seeing how WWE booked the match, it is clear that Vince McMahon and the creative team do not want Del Rio to be seen as a credible champion who will get heat from the crowd.

The match itself was very good, a lot better than I expected it to be, but it was Cena who was made to look like the star and Del Rio was just lucky to be in the same ring with him.

Del Rio kept beating on Cena, but in typical Superman fashion, the Fruity Pebble Warrior could not be kept down by one man. They even used Ricardo Rodriguez at times to help Del Rio, but that wasn’t enough.

Finally, after Del Rio was given an Attitude Adjustment through a table, Miz and R-Truth came out to make the save and beat up Cena. Miz gave him the skull-crushing finale, but Cena got up from that after being beaten on by four men at various times.

Del Rio got back up and gave Cena a shot to the head with the title belt, and it was all over. I suppose WWE deserves credit for giving Del Rio the victory, but it was not the way that it should have been handled.

Del Rio had to go over strong in order to get some clout with the fans, but instead he came off as another guy who was just handed the title while Cena goes and works on something else more important.

And it is not like WWE is so flush with talent right now that Del Rio can just step in the ring with another top superstar, go over strong and instantly become the great heel champion that the company needs him to be right now.

This match on this night was supposed to put Del Rio on the map, but only if it was done correctly. It was not, and he is nothing more than that wrestler who has the championship because external forces helped him along the way.
