WWE Vengeance Results: What's Next for Cody Rhodes After Loss to Randy Orton?

Tom ClarkOct 23, 2011

Randy Orton defeated Cody Rhodes at WWE Vengeance on Sunday night. The pinfall came after Orton hit the RKO, ending a very well wrestled, entertaining match.

This is what a pro wrestling pay per view match is all about.

Orton and Rhodes definitely brought their A game in this bout, and it’s obvious that each man is very comfortable with the other in the ring.

It’s reminiscent of Orton’s feud with Christian.  The way both men went move for move, playing a game of wits as they each fought for the upper hand.

The biggest difference?  While Christian seems to be sitting still, and is used to giving other guys the rub, Cody is a Superstar on the way up the ladder of WWE.

Rhodes is of course the son of the American Dream, Dusty Rhodes.  Cody brings a lot of the same drive to the business that his father had, and his hard work is now really beginning to pay off.

The fact that he lost the match is not that much of a surprise, mostly because there is so much potential for he and Orton in this feud to continue beyond Vengeance.

Their heat has been happening for a while now, and the buzz around their rivalry has been the same for nearly every fan who’s followed them.

Cody Rhodes is the next big deal.

A young man with a bright future, a wrestler with a great gimmick and a real hook that gets him over every time he steps into the ring.  That’s Rhodes.  And, he’s just getting warmed up.

From his first entry into WWE, as the tag team partner of Hardcore Holly, fans witnessed the natural ability that Cody has, a worker with obvious influence from not only Dusty but his brother Dustin as well.

From there, Cody of course saw his biggest push when he became a member of Randy Orton’s Legacy with Ted Dibiase,

The three second generation Superstars wreaked havoc in WWE, claiming superiority over all of the other talent, including their own fathers.  They then set out to prove it.

But much like every heel faction that features a top heel at the head, eventually it became clear that Rhodes and Dibiase were being used to merely cover Orton, to have his back in his big matches.  That time honored tradition worked for a while.  Until WWE decided to split the men up.

Rhodes became “Dashing,” an egotist completely focused on his looks and convinced that he was God’s gift to the business.  His gimmick was okay, but something seemed not quite right.

Then, Cody’s nose was broken, and everything changed.

Donning a protective face mask in his matches, Cody Rhodes lost his ego, replacing it with a dark side that no one ever knew he had.

Now, not only did his gimmick feel right, it felt perfect.

To be honest, Cody is somewhat of a ham when it comes to his character.  Let’s be real, he’s pretty overdramatic, almost to the point of being a little silly.

But, he somehow manages to pull back at just the right time. Just when you feel compelled to laugh at his words, you stop at his actions.

He’s not just playing a character. He knows exactly what to do and how to do it. He’s very comfortable in his own skin, and it definitely shows.

Cody may not have won this match, but he is still the Intercontinental Champion. He is also still the future of WWE.

What’s next for Rhodes? The top of the company.

It may not have been today. And it may not be tomorrow. But, it’s coming. And, his feud with Randy is just another step in the right direction.

I for one do not see this rivalry being over, and with Survivor Series being around the corner, each man would be a great team captain.  Facing off in any situation, both Orton and Rhodes will likely bring everything they have, and that is a win-win for all fans.
