Kyle Boller and the 7 Most Useless Backups in the NFL

Aliko CarterOct 23, 2011

Kyle Boller started in place of Jason Campbell for the Raiders today. Many members of the Oakland faithful (including myself) had wanted to see Carson Palmer start this game.

There was a surprising Terrelle Pryor sighting in the first half, but for the most part, Hue Jackson gave the reins of the offense to Boller. The backup returned the goodwill by throwing three picks against the Chiefs, which led to 14 Kansas City points.

In recognition of Boller's fairly atrocious outing against a relatively beatable Chiefs squad, we're going to take a look at the most useless backup quarterbacks in the NFL today.

Curtis Painter, Indianapolis Colts

1 of 7

The Colts are playing the Saints tonight in a game no one really wants to see in the Sunday Night Football lineup, and Curtis Painter is a big reason why.

The importance of Peyton Manning to the Colts offense cannot possibly be overstated. Painter hasn't been horrible, recording five TDs to only one interception, but he lacks the killer instinct that has made Manning such a successful quarterback. Though they've come close on a number of occasions, the Colts haven't recorded a win under Painter's watch. In this sense, he's the definition of useless.

Kerry Collins, Indianapolis Colts

2 of 7

Continuing with the Colts, Kerry Collins didn't look so great earlier this season either. In two-and-a-half games this season, he completed fewer than 50 percent of his passes, recorded four fumbles and had an overall QB rating of 66. He was also winless.

Charlie Batch, Pittsburgh Steelers

3 of 7

Charlie Batch last saw regular season action in 2010. With Ben Roethlisberger out due to suspension, Batch anchored the Steelers offense during the first few weeks. During the one good game he had, a 38-13 victory over the Bucs, he recorded three touchdowns to two interceptions. Not bad, but those were the only TDs he would record during his stint. Big Ben would return to lead the Steelers to the Super Bowl.

David Carr, New York Giants

4 of 7

Since being dropped as a starter by the Houston Texans after the 2006 season, David Carr has bounced around the NFL as a backup, most recently for the Giants and 49ers. His quality of play has been in steady decline. In his last regular-season appearance, for the Niners in 2010, he was sacked and intercepted without recording a score. He only completed 5-of-13 pass attempts, and recorded a QB rating of only 23.

Sage Rosenfels, Miami Dolphins

5 of 7

Sage Rosenfels was picked up by Miami when Chad Henne went down for the season, but has not seen playing time. As a matter of fact, he hasn't seen regular-season snaps since 2008 when he was a member of the Houston Texans. Miami is a bad team with an unfortunate QB situation, and yet, Rosenfels will probably not play this year, either.

A.J. Feeley, St. Louis Rams

6 of 7

The Rams have been horrible this year. Sam Bradford is a good quarterback with a lot of potential, but Steve Spagnuolo decided to change things up this week and start A.J. Feeley. The result, despite Feeley going 20/33 for 196 yards, was a 34-7 whooping by the Cowboys. If a quarterback cannot execute in the red-zone, he's not worth much in the NFL. Today, Feeley showed us why hasn't played a regular-season game since 2007.

Kyle Boller, Oakland Raiders

7 of 7

Three picks, no scores and a second-half benching.  Something tells me we won't be seeing Kyle Boller take a snap again this season.
