Why Tim Tebow's Success Exposes Miami Dolphins' Plans to Tank for Andrew Luck

Gary DavenportOct 23, 2011

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow gave his supporters something to cheer about (and then some) Sunday, rallying his team from a 15 point fourth quarter deficit to stun the reeling Miami Dolphins 18-15 in overtime.

However, Tebow and the Broncos could not have accomplished this improbable feat without a secret weapon, the sort of ace in the hole that more often than not is the difference between defeat and victory.

That secret weapon? The Miami Dolphins.

For the first 55 minutes of Sunday's game, Tebow was a pathetic 4 of 14 passing for 40 yards and had been a huge part of the Denver offense doing absolutely nothing. However, around that point in the game the Dolphins came to a very important realization.

They were in serious danger of actually winning the game, and winning games isn't going to get you the golden goose of college football, that being the right to draft Stanford signal-caller Andrew Luck.

So, like any team faced with a challenge or adversity the Dolphins rallied around each other and got down to business. The business of losing.

Through a combination of hard work and a little bit of "Luck" the Dolphins allowed Tebow to go 9 of 13 through the air over the last 5 minutes of the game, circling the wagons enough to permit two touchdown passes and a two-point conversion that tied the game at 15 and opened the door for the Dolphins to emerge victorious.

I'm not talking about winning the game, silly. That sort of victory is hollow and fleeting, I'm talking about the sort of victory that could net you your franchise quarterback of the future, the sort of victory that requires an incredible amount of determination and dedication to doing whatever is necessary to be the absolute worst that the National Football League has to offer.

There are other franchises involved in the "Suck for Luck" sweepstakes, but today the Miami Dolphins sent a message to those other teams.

Oh yeah, we're bad. And we're fully capable of being worse.

Well played gentlemen.
