2012 NFL Draft: Top Non-Quarterbacks Indianapolis Colts Could Draft in Round One
Let's face reality: The Colts are finding ways to lose right now. I feel that will change, though, by the end of the year with the right changes.
The Colts' playoff and 10-win streaks are going to end this year, but they won't be as bad as people think.
I have the Colts finishing 5-11 for the year with wins at home against Carolina, Jacksonville, Tennessee and Houston, and on the road against Jacksonville to close out the season.
That could be a stretch, but it won't be much worse if it is.
That, according to my projections, will get the Colts the 10th pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
I feel top quarterbacks Andrew Luck, Landry Jones and Matt Barkley will already be off the board by time the Colts pick at No. 10.
That being said, the Colts should utilize a top-10 pick and pick someone who can help another position and grab a quarterback in the second or third round.
These are the top players right now that the Colts should be taking a look at for a potential pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
Ray Ray Armstrong: SS, Miami
1 of 5Ray Ray Armstrong helps at a position the Colts definitely need help in at safety. Year in and out, the Colts have secondary problems and injuries.
In years past, Bob Sanders was consistently hurt. This year and last year, Melvin Bullitt has been put on IR.
It's time for a new safety instead of signing one off the streets.
Armstrong is a big safety. He's 6'4" and 215 pounds. He loves to be physical and makes big hits. Armstrong is also very quick and reads routes well.
He was a second-team All-ACC last year with 79 tackles and three interceptions.
Armstrong is rated as the top safety in next year's draft.
Morris Claiborne: CB, LSU
2 of 5Claiborne is also available to help a weak Colts secondary. He could come in and help/start at a position where Jacob Lacey and Jerraud Powers, the current starters, need to be cut.
Claiborne is a 6'0" 185-pound cornerback.
He was 2010 second-team All-SEC and led the team with 11 passes deflected. He also picked off a team-high five interceptions.
He started off 2011 great for LSU and is a huge contributor in what could be the best defense in the nation.
Claiborne is ranked as the second cornerback in next year's draft.
Brandon Thompson: DT, Clemson
3 of 5Brandon Thompson is yet another one that can come in and start immediately. He would be a great complement for a defensive line with Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.
Thompson is a 6'2" 310-pound defensive tackle.
Last season for Clemson he had 56 tackles, 7.5 of which were for a loss.
This year he's a huge contributor for the undefeated Clemson Tigers.
Thompson is rated as the No. 1 defensive tackle in next year's draft and could be there at No. 10 for the Colts.
Alshon Jeffrey: WR, South Carolina
4 of 5With the disappointment of Anthony Gonzalez and the deterioration of Austin Collie since his two concussions suffered last season, the Colts will need another weapon on offense.
Jeffrery could be that guy.
Jefferey is the big receiver the Colts need. He's 6'4" and 229 pounds. Most Colts receivers are smaller but quick. He's the big target they've been looking for.
Jeffery is one of the finalists for the Biletnikoff Award (NCAA's top receiver), an All-American and a unanimous All-SEC selection.
He's set single-season records at South Carolina for receptions and receiving yards.
He was an All-SEC as a freshman and and All-American.
Jeffery would be a steal at No. 10 in that he's rated as the second-best receiver in the draft.
Jonathan Martin: OT, Stanford
5 of 5The 6'6" 305-pound junior offensive tackle from Stanford would be a huge addition for a weak offensive line.
He was a 2010 first-team Pac-10 selection and protects the blind side of the potential No. 1 pick, Andrew Luck.
He's been a key contributor on an offensive line that allowed six sacks, second-fewest in the nation last year. The line also helped the team gain the second-highest rushing total in school history last year as well.
The Cardinal offense is a high-powered offense and Martin is a huge key.
Martin is ranked as the No. 2 offensive tackle in the draft next year.
