NFL Week 7: Who's Hot, Who's Not at the WR Position
Entering Week 7 of this NFL season, we've seen some fantastic and not-so-fantastic performances from the league's wide receivers.
Stars like Wes Welker, A.J. Green and DeSean Jackson are on their bye weeks, but Week 7 features a slate of excellent receivers looking to keep their hot streak alive. It also gives a few lukewarm or even ice-cold players a chance to warm themselves up.
So which wide receivers are hot and which ones are not, going into Week 7? Lets take a look.
Hot: Raiders' Darrius Heyward-Bey
1 of 10Darrius Heyward-Bey in the first two games this season: 49 yards, five catches, no touchdowns.
In his last three games: 98.6 yards per game and a touchdown. He's become one of the focal points in the Raiders passing attack.
With the team's passing game changing around him—the injury to Jason Campbell and the addition of Carson Palmer—who knows if Heyward-Bey can keep up at this level. But luckily for him and his team, Oakland faces a very weak Kansas City squad before getting its bye week, so he'll have plenty of time to work with Palmer. Expect his production to continue.
Not: Broncos' Eric Decker
2 of 10Perhaps it's a bit unfair the say that Eric Decker is not hot, but he's coming off his first disappointing week of the season. He'd been averaging 67.5 yards a game over the first four contests and had scored four touchdowns.
In Sunday's 29-24 loss to San Diego, Decker had minus-four yards on two catches. Ouch.
In Decker's favor: The Broncos just traded Brandon Lloyd, which leaves Decker as the clear No. 1 on the team.
Not in Decker's favor: Tim Tebow is starting. Until he proves otherwise, this is not a good thing for any Bronco.
Hot: Saints' Marques Colston
3 of 10Marques Colston broke his collarbone in the season opener against the Packers and missed two weeks of action.
He looked fantastic in Week 6, getting 118 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions in the 26-20 loss to Tampa Bay.
He had 69 yards on five catches in the Week 5 victory over Carolina in his first full game since the injury.
Expect the Colston comeback train to keep on rolling through Indianapolis, where the dismal Colts have no one to stop Drew Brees or Colston.
Not: Falcons' Roddy White
4 of 10Atlanta's Roddy White had a touchdown against the Packers in Week 5 and a mediocre 50 yards on six catches.
But against Carolina, one of the weakest defenses in the league, White had just 21 yards on two catches and no touchdowns. The Falcons did get the victory, however, winning 31-17.
White was definitely hot a few weeks ago when he gained 218 yards in Weeks 3 and 4. But his current struggles are definitely not good for an inconsistent Falcons offense.
He'll need to pick it up if Atlanta wants to consistently win. And that'll be easier said than done with the Falcons hosting the Lions.
Hot: Colts' Pierre Garcon
5 of 10While his team is definitely struggling, Pierre Garcon is having an excellent season so far, averaging 94.4 yards a contest and scoring four touchdowns. His best performance came in the Monday night loss to Tampa Bay in Week 3, when he had 146 yards and two touchdowns on his only two catches of the game.
With Indianapolis' offense in tatters without Peyton Manning, it's good to see Garcon continually produce. Curtis Painter is certainly no Manning, but he and Garcon are producing modestly well. If Indianapolis has any hope of winning, it may rest with that tag team.
Not: Colts' Reggie Wayne
6 of 10It's a shame that Garcon's teammate, Reggie Wayne, isn't playing quite so well.
Wayne, a high fantasy pick before the season, hasn't adapted as well as Garcon has to life without Manning. He has just one touchdown on the season and his best game was a 77-yard outing against Kansas City.
He is 32, so not all of his struggles are probably to be blamed on the lack of Manning, but he's hardly the 1,000-yard plus receiver he used to be.
Hot: Lions' Calvin Johnson
7 of 10And the award for most obvious selection goes to...
Calvin Johnson, who for the first time this season failed to score a touchdown in Sunday's 25-19 loss to San Francisco. Even so, you could hardly say he was disappointing—he had 113 yards, after all.
He's racked up 564 yards so far this season, or 94 yards a contest, and has nine touchdowns this season. Next up for the Lions is a trip to Atlanta to face a Falcons team that gives up 283 passing yards a contest, so expect Johnson to keep up his hot streak and score a touchdown or two.
Not: Jets' Plaxico Burress
8 of 10Remember when Plaixco Burress was the sexy pick for "comeback player of the year"? Yeah, that hasn't turned out so well.
The Jets offense has been fairly dismal and Burress has been as well. He has just 14 catches and 216 total yards in six contests so far, although he does have two touchdowns.
The Jets have been a big disappointment this season, and while they're trying to win more games on the ground with their run game, 216 yards on the season is well below what some expected Burress to obtain.
Hot: Steelers' Mike Wallace
9 of 10Mike Wallace had 76 yards and a touchdown last week against Jacksonville—and that 76 is the lowest yardage he's gotten all season.
Wallace averages 102 yards a contest and has reeled in four touchdown passes on the season and is perhaps the biggest reason the Steelers have regained their footing in the playoff hunt.
Next up for Wallace and the Steelers is Arizona, which is middle of the pack in terms of passing defense. Expect Wallace and Pittsburgh to keep on rolling.
Not: Redskins' Santana Moss
10 of 10The Redskins have had an up-and-down season, but for Santana Moss it's been more down than up. Father Time seems to have finally caught up with the 32-year-old, who in the last two contests has just 38.5 yards per game and no touchdowns for Washington.
Certainly with the horrid play by Rex Grossman, you couldn't expect Moss to really thrive, but he just doesn't look like the same player he used to be.
