Week 7 Fantasy Football Rankings: Tim Tebow and 5 Tremendous QB Pickups

Eric BallOct 19, 2011
The QB situation in the NFL is changing rapidly.
Sam Bradford is getting cut, Matt Schaub is getting benched and Cam Newton is a top-five option.
On top of all that, there are a handful of QB changes that are going to provide even more potential fantasy stars. Here are five QBs to pick up in Week 7 who will potentially turn into starter-worthy for the remainder of the season.

5. Charlie Whitehurst, Seattle Seahawks

1 of 5
This is more for this week only, but it's hard to ignore that Whitehurst threw for 149 yards and a touchdown in relief of Tarvaris Jackson in Seattle’s last game.
Whitehurst is more accurate, stays in the pocket and seems to have a firm grasp of the Seattle offense. With Sidney Rice on board, Whitehurst will be able to move the ball.
I’m not calling him your fantasy savior, but he's worth a look this week—especially against a Browns team that will likely be without top defensive back Joe Haden.

4. Matt Cassel, Kansas City Chiefs

2 of 5
The Chiefs surprised everybody by showing some life and winning two games in a row. Matt Cassel is finally starting to utilize offseason pickup Steve Breaston, and Dwayne Bowe is still good enough to just chuck it up for him to go get it—even Cassel can do that.
As Jackie Battle solidifies the running game, making the offense balanced yet again, Cassel is a legit pickup to ease your bye week and may even be worth starting later in the season with some very favorable matchups around fantasy playoff time.

3. Carson Palmer, Oakland Raiders

3 of 5
Carson Palmer may have thrown 20 interceptions last year, but he also had almost 4,000 yards. For the first time in his career he doesn’t have a diva receiver to throw to, and expect him to relish it.
It's going to be a slow start this week against Kansas City, but that's because Palmer literally has three days to prepare. He may not throw the deep ball like his incredible 2005 season, but he has the ability to clear the 200-yard hurdle each and every week.
It's hard to determine how many TD throws he’ll make, but you can assume there will be plenty of opportunities in a well-balanced Raider offense.
Just remember that Jason Campbell was sporting an above-average fantasy season, and now Palmer takes the reins with a stronger arm and a better grasp of being a successful QB in this league.

2. Matt Hasselbeck, Tennessee Titans

4 of 5
Not sure why he’s still available in 50 percent of current ESPN fantasy leagues, because Hasselbeck is a top-12 QB right now.
Hasselbeck has nine TDs in five games and has never thrown for less than 220 yards. He has scored double-digit fantasy points every week, and still put up 262 yards and a TD on the No. 1-ranked Steelers defense—without the help of Kenny Britt—in Week 5.
With the bye now in the rear-view, Hasselbeck gets to feast on the horrendous AFC South five more times this season, including this week with Houston.
The veteran still has some gas left in the tank, so expect him to keep up his reliable production.

1. Tim Tebow, Denver Broncos

5 of 5
Say what you want about the guy, but Tebow can really put up fantasy points.
He’s a running QB who is already the team's goal-line back—just like Cam Newton in Carolina (remember that rushing TDs are worth more than passing TDs in most leagues). Consider that last year Tebow had six TDs on the ground in only three starts, while averaging 66 yards on the ground in those starts, and you have a great fantasy day without adding in the passing aspect.
Sure he's completed less than 50 percent of his 92 career NFL passes, but he's very creative and able to run around the pocket long enough to find the open man.
Speaking of—Eric Decker, Demaryius Thomas and Eddie Royal are all more than capable receivers, so the recent trade of Brandon Lloyd doesn't hurt as much as you think.
So let’s figure Tebow gets a rushing TD with around 50 yards, plus one passing touchdown with around 175 passing yards—that equates to a stellar fantasy performance.
And those are conservative projections.
Tebow may not make his actual team much better, but he can vault your fantasy team up the standings in a hurry.
