WWE Vengeance 2011: Previews and Predictions for Who Will Get Their Vengeance
This Sunday WWE presents Vengeance, an event which has not happened since 2006—when the main event was a 5-on-2 handicap match between DX and the Spirit Squad.
So far there are seven matches confirmed for the event, including four title defences.
This month, I've got my good friend and long-time wrestling fan Darryl 'Fayte' Rolandsen to throw his two cents into the picture.
So let's take a look at the card.
Cody Rhodes vs Randy Orton
1 of 8This is likely to be remembered as a landmark match in the new era of the Intercontinental Championship. Finally some prestige is going to be brought back to the IC title, and having Orton in the title hunt will do exactly that.
Of course, it is not confirmed that this match is for the IC title—but if it isn't, it is very likely they will have a title bout in the near future.
This feud has built up dramatically since the Hell in a Cell PPV, with Rhodes "bagging" Orton on Raw and spoiling his title shot on SmackDown in the past two weeks.
Rikki: I'm so excited for this feud, which has been a long time coming. This match will be the start of a lengthy battle between the two. I'm fully expecting Rhodes to retain his championship. Orton has little to lose from a loss, whereas Rhodes has so much to gain from the victory. A dirty win from Rhodes will set this feud off to a flier.
Rikki's Prediction: Cody Rhodes
Fayte: Orton vs Rhodes is going down as my show stealer. These guys have had good matches in the past, and this shouldn't be any different. I'd like to see these two feud for a while and for this to happen, Rhodes will need to pick up the victory. The mask is always a game changer.
Fayte's Prediction: Cody Rhodes
Air Boom (C) vs Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger for the Tag Team Titles
2 of 8Air Boom and ZigSwag are basically the only two active teams in the Tag Team division at the moment, so this was an obvious addition to the Vengeance card.
I'm sure we can all agree that it's great to see legitimate tag team matches at PPVs again, and this match is a great example of four stars of the WWE working together to put on a good tag team match.
Rikki: I really think that the WWE needs to add another couple of teams into the division in order to make it more than a two-horse race. In my honest opinion, I feel that the WWE is wasting someone else's spot by having Dolph Ziggler competing in two divisions at once.
Despite this, Ziggler with two titles would do wonders for his character and draw decent heat from crowd—so I think ZigSwag could be stealing a win at Vengeance.
Rikki's Prediction: Ziggler and Swagger
Fayte: The energy between these four guys is always good, so I expect a great match. In the end, I see ZigSwag bringing the belts to the dark side. WWE Creative are taking chances with Ziggler and Swagger, so I expect their stock to rise by dominating the Tag Team division for a while.
Fayte's Prediction: Ziggler and Swagger
Sheamus vs Christian
3 of 8This feud has definitely materialised from the fact that neither star has anything else on at the moment. Sheamus is quickly becoming one of the biggest faces in the company and could soon be on par with Superstars like CM Punk, Randy Orton and even John Cena.
Christian, on the other hand, is a Superstar in decline and has aligned himself with a stable made up of midcard stars. Christian is really in need of a win, is Vengeance going to be his?
Rikki: I think that it's obvious that this feud will determine who is going to be the next No. 1 contender for the WHC, and I am convinced that it will be Sheamus.
For this match, however, I'm split down the middle. I'm gonna plump for Christian because Sheamus took the last victory and, realistically, this feud needs to continue.
Rikki's Prediction: Christian
Fayte: I can't see past Sheamus anymore. He's slowly being groomed into one of the big players and, unfortunately, Christian is his stepping stone on the way to his first World Heavyweight title.
Fayte's Prediction: Sheamus
Mark Henry (C) vs Big Show for the World Heavyweight Championship
4 of 8This really is going to be a heavyweight match. Like many expected, the Big Show returned from injury to set his sights on the guy that put him on the shelf—and somehow earned himself a title shot.
Can the Big Show stop the monster Mark Henry? Or will he be taking a return trip to the Hall of Pain?
Rikki: These two last clashed at Money in the Bank months ago, which is when Mark Henry's monstrous side really started to come out. This match was OK, but they will really need to step up their game to really grab everyone's attention this time around.
Henry's doing great at the moment and I can't see his run ending at this PPV.
Rikki's Prediction: Mark Henry
Fayte: I'm never too excited by a big man match up, but Mark Henry is on a good roll and Big Show should not stop that. It wouldn't surprise me if Henry didn't pick up the victory, but he's not leaving Vengeance without his title. Big Show to take the win via DQ.
Fayte's Prediction: Big Show
Alberto Del Rio (C) vs John Cena for the WWE Title
5 of 8Vengeance sees John Cena cash in his rematch clause for the WWE title against Alberto Del Rio. This past Monday night on Raw, Cena won the opportunity to pick the stipulation for this match and went for a Last Man Standing match. Surely John Cena can't lose a Last Man Standing match, can he?
Rikki: It's time for Cena to take a break from the title scene and focus on the bigger picture in the WWE. We know that Cena is booked for the classic Survivor Series match, so maybe it's time that he became a bigger part of the wider conspiracy storyline.
No one really has much of an interest in this feud, so maybe it's best that these two move on from this as soon as possible.
Rikki's Prediction: Alberto Del Rio
Fayte: Cena losing a Last Man Standing match seems very far fetched, but WWE Creative really need to do a better job of booking Del Rio this time round. I'm expecting Del Rio to come out on top via some underhanded tactic.
Cena needs to focus on the Rock and Del Rio has other Superstars in his future.
Fayte's Prediction: Alberto Del Rio
Beth Phoenix (C) vs Eve Torres for the Diva's Title
6 of 8After months of feuding with Kelly Kelly, Beth Phoenix defends her newly-accquired title belt against Kelly's sidekick, Eve Torres. Will the Glamazon be walking out with her title intact?
Rikki: I like the fact that this is a breath of fresh air from the usual Kelly Kelly-based inability, but seriously, the build up to this match has been non-existant. It just seemed to be decided randomly.
For this reason I think that Phoenix will retain, it really wouldn't make sense for Eve to pick up the title. This match should be a nice chance for us all to grab a beer from the fridge before the main event kicks off.
Rikki's Prediction: Beth Phoenix
Fayte: My money's on a good night for Beth Phoenix. I'm looking forward to a long overdue title run from Beth Phoenix, and she will undoubtedly showcase her dominance in this bout.
Fayte's Prediction: Beth Phoenix
Triple H & CM Punk vs Awesome Truth
7 of 8This match truly encapsulates 'Vengeance'. Awesome Truth were a big factor in Triple H losing his job as COO and now he wants revenge.
CM Punk is also looking to exact his revenge on the pair, as they attacked him after his WWE title match at Hell in a Cell.
On top of this, Awesome Truth want their revenge on Triple H for fining them $250,000 each and suspending them.
So who will be able to say "Vengeance was mine"?
Rikki: This match is going to be AWWWWWWESOOOOOOME, and that's the truth. I think it's going to be a pretty brutal encounter where in the end, Awesome Truth come out on top. Why do I think this? Because this match needs to run onto Survivor Series and for this, Triple H needs to lose.
I don't however, think we will be seeing Kevin Nash like everyone is expecting, or, for that matter, Shawn Michaels. One thing I've noticed about the IWC recently is that everyone is expecting a comeback every PPV.
The names Kevin Nash, Shawn Michaels and Mick Foley have been in almost every PPV prediction article on B/R in the past couple of months, and people really need to chill out on the idea that there will be a return of some form at every PPV.
If there are any antics towards the end of this match, let's hope it isn't as much of a mess as Punk/HHH was at Night of Champions.
Rikki's Prediction: Awesome Truth
Fayte: This match should be a stormer. I'm looking forward to finally seeing these men in the ring together. I'd like to think that Miz and Truth have the momentum and better chemistry going into this, but I can't look past Punk and Trips for this one.
Despite this, I'd like to think that at the end of the storyline, none of these men are coming out as losers.
Fayte's Prediction: Triple H & CM Punk
