2012 NFL Draft: 4 General Managers That Will Have a Great Draft
While the 2012 NFL draft is still months away, it is time to start speculating on who will come out on top. We are just about halfway through the season and are beginning to sense a draft order.
Of course, whoever has the No. 1 pick will come out on top with Andrew Luck. Whether they need a quarterback or not, Luck could be used as leverage for other transactions.
One general manager who won't have a great draft? Thomas Dimitroff of the Atlanta Falcons is historically one of the best general managers but gave away all of their draft picks for Roddy White.
Then there are the usuals like Ted Thompson, Mickey Loomis, and Kevin Colbert who typically always have good drafts and their teams are powerhouses.
Bill Polian: Indianapolis Colts
1 of 4Bill Polian could easily have the best draft, something he is known for. Polian selected Peyton Manning in 1998 over Ryan Leaf, who turned out to be one of the biggest busts as a player. In 2006 he chose Joseph Addai, who ended up helping the Colts claim another Super Bowl.
The Colts will need a quarterback to replace Peyton Manning, who is suffering from a career-altering neck injury.
Polian checked out Andrew Luck during the Stanford-Duke game in September but also went down to Michigan State to look at Kirk Cousins. Cousins attended the Manning Passing Camp over the summer.
They also may have some wide receiver slots to fill, as Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon and Anthony Gonzalez will all become free agents after this season.
Rick Spielman: Minnesota Vikings
2 of 4Unless the Vikings turn their season around, they will also be high up in the draft. Which is not the best place considering that Rick Spielman does not have the most successful record in upper rounds of the draft. He also has a history of trading away his team's good draft picks.
A great option for Spielman would be Matt Kalil, the offensive left tackle out of Southern California.
The franchise could also benefit from a long-term wide receiver who can help out Christian Ponder as he grows.
The most sought after will be Justin Blackmon and Alshon Jeffrey, both of whom would be great options in Minnesota.
Bill Devaney: St. Louis Rams
3 of 4While the Rams have recently made some moves in acquiring Brandon Lloyd in a trade with the Broncos, their wide receiver situation is not totally resolved. However they will still need a long-term wide receiver.
It would be smart for the Rams to get either Michael Floyd, Justin Blackmon or Alshon Jeffrey—any of whom would be great targets for Sam Bradford.
Bill Devaney will need to work on getting that wallet open though, he has a history of being cheap, particularly with free agents, and he doesn't have the best track record.
Jeff Ireland: Miami Dolphins
4 of 4The Dolphins really need a great draft in 2012, and it looks like they could be in a good position to make that happen. GM Jeff Ireland was a longtime scout for the Cowboys so he should be able to make the decisions to put the 'Fins on top.
The first order of business for the Dolphins in the upcoming draft? A franchise quarterback. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross wants one in 2012, which is understandable, especially after cancelling the Kyle Orton trade.
Year after year they have been mediocre, and it's time for Jeff Ireland to grab the bull by the horns and take a QB who will bring excitement back to Miami.
There is still time for all of these teams to get in gear before the season's end, but if they stay on the same path, these GMs will surely come out on top April 26.
