Jason Campbell Injury: Why David Garrard Isn't the Answer for Oakland Raiders

Tim KeeneyOct 17, 2011

Jason Campbell has reportedly broken his collarbone and is expected to miss the rest of the entire season, according to Rotoworld.

"

Jason Campbell broke his collarbone in Sunday's game against the Browns and is expected to miss the rest of the season. The break appeared to be on Campbell's throwing side, ending any chance of a return this year. That leaves Kyle Boller as the Raiders' starter and the Raiders will have to look to the street for a No. 3 quarterback. It's unlikely rookie project Terrelle Pryor is already prepared to be one injury away from seeing the field. Downgrade the entire Raiders' passing game going forward.

This is obviously a huge blow to the Oakland Raiders, and according to Adam Schefter, David Garrard is a legitimate possibility. "Raiders have reached out to David Garrard. It doesn't mean they will sign him, but it does confirm there is some level of interest," Schefter said via his Twitter account.

Is Garrard really the best direction to go, however?

The Raiders have Kyle Boller and Terrelle Pryor as their two quarterbacks right now, so an internal replacement is pretty much out of the question if they want to compete for the playoffs, but I'm not sure if David Garrard is the way to go.

If Garrard is willing to sign a one-year contract, then all bets are off. He would be the perfect fit and the Raiders would need to sign him right away.

He's the perfect quarterback to run this offense. He just needs to manage the game and not make any mistakes. That was always Garrard's role with Jacksonville.

However, will Garrard really be willing to sign a one-year contract?

He was pretty publicly upset when the Jaguars let him go before this season, and he made it pretty clear he wants a secure relationship with a team. Not just a one-night (season) stand.

If Garrard is only willing to sign a multiple-year contract, should the Raiders do it?

It would obviously help them out for this year, but it would just create controversy in the offseason.

Campbell is a free agent after this year, so the Raiders would have to be willing to just cut ties with him if they wanted to continue with Garrard as their future quarterback. I realize the NFL is a business, but what a cold move that would be.

Campbell is beginning to look like a legitimate playoff quarterback, then he breaks his collarbone and is suddenly forgotten about and given no chance to re-sign.

Garrard is the best chance the Raiders have at remaining a playoff team for this season, but is he a better option than the younger Jason Campbell for the future?

Because if the Raiders want Garrard, they'll likely have to take him for the future as well.
