2012 NFL Mock Draft: Latest Update on Chase for Andrew Luck

Wes ODonnellOct 17, 2011

There is no question about who the No. 1 pick is going to be this year.

The drama we have become accustomed to will not be part of the draft process in 2012.

Instead, we are treated to a true test of which NFL team is willing to lose more to land the next Peyton Manning-like prospect.

Luck is a rare breed of athlete, brains and football player.

The fun phrase, "Such for Luck" is very much in play for the remainder of the season.

Here is the latest update on the chase for Andrew Luck.

1. Miami Dolphins (0-4)

1 of 6

Do you see that face?

That is the face of a receiver who would trade virtually anything to get a consistent quarterback throwing him the football.

The Dolphins haven't played terrible, but they know how to lose games as well as anyone and have moved on from the Chad Henne injury with Matt Moore and Sage Rosenfels as their quarterbacks.

Don't be shocked if rookie running back Daniel Thomas, if he's ever healthy, starts taking snaps too (only half kidding).

The former JUCO quarterback might be their best bet to round out the season and essentially "Suck for Luck."

The Dolphins play the Jets tonight on Monday Night Football.

2. St. Louis Rams (0-5)

2 of 6

The St. Louis Rams are on this list not because they are going to replace Sam Bradford with Andrew Luck, but because they're playing so poorly that there is a good shot they land the No. 1 pick for the second time in three years.

That means they go on the hunt for a trading partner. Or rather, a trading partner comes hunting them.

Should the Rams land the No. 1 spot they need to leverage it for all it is worth.

Without the monster guaranteed contracts like Bradford got when he was taken No. 1, other teams can now afford to trade up with the new rookie salary cap.

Potential trade partners would include:

Denver (because if Tebow fails then they'll need something new to sell the fans on);
Philadelphia (because giving Michael Vick all that money was foolish);
Kansas City (because giving Matt Cassel all that money was foolish and Todd Haley might be out of job);
Seattle (because "3rd-and-Long" Jackson and Clipboard Whitehurst aren't the answer);
Washington (see: Grossman, Rex on Chicago Bears);
Dallas (how many more chances does Tony Romo get?).

3. Indianapolis Colts (0-6)

3 of 6

The Indianapolis Colts are awful and will not win football games without Peyton Manning ... until they get Andrew Luck, at least.

Manning signed a five-year deal prior to this season and he certainly doesn't plan on going out injured.

Whether he plays out all five years is another question, but he'll at least be back for two more.

Luck may not want to sit, but owner Jim Irsay has already alluded to a potential Brett Favre - Aaron Rodgers type situation.

The Colts are that bad and may never get a shot at a QB like Luck again. If they earn the No. 1 pick he has to be the choice.

4. Denver Broncos (1-4)

4 of 6

The Broncos are a serious threat to earn the No. 1 pick with Tim Tebow under center now.

They were a serious threat with Kyle Orton, too.

The team around the quarterback in Denver simply isn't good.

Reports today also indicate that they plan on trading Brandon Lloyd to the St. Louis Rams (good for the Rams, seeing as you can possibly put his hands on Danario Alexander's body, add in Mike Sims-Walker's athleticism, complete it with Danny Amendola's heart and they might have a solid No. 1 receiver, after all).

This is hardly surprising from an organization that truly doesn't seem like they want Tebow to succeed.

If he leads them to the No. 1 pick it will be incredibly tempting for John Elway to draft Luck.

5. Seattle Seahawks (2-3)

5 of 6

The Seahawks might pull too many "surprise" wins like the win against the New York Giants to truly land the No. 1 pick.

They're not completely awful, but their prone to complete collapses as well.

Carroll needs a legitimate franchise quarterback, and even if he combined Tarvaris "3rd-and-Long" Jackson with Charlie "Where's My Clipboard?" Whitehurst, he still wouldn't have one.

Luck is rare specimen, and should the Seahawks completely flame out, then Luck would be a top target for them whether they earn the No. 1 pick or not.

A trade is certainly not out of the question for this team.
