NFL Trade Rumors: Is Carson Palmer or Kyle Orton More Likely to Be Moved?

Zach KruseOct 17, 2011

The NFL trading deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 18, and the Oakland Raiders suddenly need a quarterback after Jason Campbell broke his collarbone Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Campbell could be out the rest of the regular season. The two names in discussion to replace Campbell are retired Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer and recently benched Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton

But is either player likely to be moved to the Raiders before the deadline?

Sources are saying that the Raiders are in talks with the Bengals to acquire Palmer, and Orton was rumored to on the trading block as far back as this summer.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, however, both players are likely staying exactly where they are right now.

Palmer has wanted out of Cincinnati since the end of last season, but owner Mike Brown has stayed strong on his belief that Palmer shouldn't be rewarded for failing to honor his contract that he signed. Even though Andy Dalton is playing well and the Bengals are 4-2, Brown doesn't appear ready to move from that position.

Sports Illustrated's Peter King believes that Palmer isn't going anywhere.

"I'd be stunned if Bengals traded Palmer. More stunned if it was to Raiders," King tweeted. "Always thought only [sic] way Cincinnati would consider it is if they got an offer of a two at [the] trading deadline."

There's no way that the Raiders send a second round pick to the Bengals for Palmer, even if it was an option to obtain Palmer.

While King also thinks that the Raiders should go after Orton, that seems like an unlikely scenario as well.

The Raiders and Broncos are rivals in the AFC West, and trading a quarterback inside the division is always risky business. The Broncos would be aiding the Raiders, even if Denver feels Orton is no longer suited to start for the Broncos.

Another option for Orton is in Miami, but that ship appears to have sailed now that Dolphins are 0-4 and turning to Matt Moore as the starter. With their season essentially lost and lame duck coach in charge, it doesn't make sense for the Dolphins to trade valuable picks for a player that can't even start for the 1-4 Broncos.

That limits the options for both players. Palmer isn't going anywhere because his owner is locked into his belief on the situation, whether you agree with him or not. Orton has likely run out of suitors now that he's played poorly in 2011 and lost his starting job.

The Raiders need to acquire a quarterback either by trade or in free agency sometime this week, but it won't be Palmer or Orton.
