NFL Power Rankings: How Do New York Giants and Rest of NFC East Stack Up?

Zachary D. RymerOct 17, 2011

The NFC East was not supposed to be a big mystery this season. The division was supposed to belong to the Philadelphia Eagles, with the other three teams fighting amongst themselves for second place.

Instead, the NFC East is looking more like the Wild West. None of the four teams in the division are running away with it, and none of the four teams are truly out of it either. It's possible the rankings within the division will change each and every week.

As for how the four teams in the NFC East stack up against the rest of the NFL, why don't we go ahead and take a closer look?

4. Philadelphia Eagles (No. 21 overall)

The Eagles ended their four-game losing streak on Sunday, beating the Washington Redskins 20-13. Might their troubles finally be over?

In my opinion, no. You have to hand it to the Eagles for getting back in the win column, but the truth of the matter is they hardly looked like a good team against the Redskins. They looked fine in the first half, but they damn near gave the game away in the second half.

Had it not been for Rex Grossman, the Eagles probably would have given the game away. All told, they are still much closer to being one of the worst teams in the league than they are to being one of the best.

3. Dallas Cowboys (No. 19 overall)

What are we going to do with the Cowboys? They are so close to being a very good team, but they're just not.

Much like the Eagles, the Cowboys have nobody but themselves to blame for that. They have a knack for falling flat when they absolutely cannot fall flat, and they thus have a knack for wasting efforts that were otherwise very strong.

The good news, I guess, is this is an easy problem to fix. The bad news is I'm not so sure anything is going to be fixed.

2. Washington Redskins (No. 15 overall)

If it wasn't clear before they lost to the Eagles, it's certainly clear now: The quarterback position is a problem for the Redskins.

Going forward, we can probably take it for granted that Grossman has worn out his welcome under center. All he had to do was throw four picks in a single game, costing his team a chance at a win.

If John Beck ends up being the answer to this problem, Sunday's events are going to be no big deal in the grand scheme of things. Quarterback is a problem, but the Redskins are solid pretty much everywhere else.

1. New York Giants (No. 12 overall)

As they usually are, the Giants are a tough team to figure. One week they're losing to one of the worst teams in the league in the Seattle Seahawks, and the next week they're beating a team like the Buffalo Bills.

This is madness without any discernible method. The Giants don't really excel at any one thing in particular, but they're really not all that bad at winning.

They're the only team in the NFC East you can say that about right now. The Giants are not one of the league's better teams, but they might just be the best team in their division.
