NFL Week 6 Picks: Philadelphia Eagles Will Handily Beat Washington Redskins

Luis BatlleOct 15, 2011

When the "Dream Team," the team that was supposed to make a Super Bowl run in 2012, is looking at a 1-4 start and could easily find itself 1-5, it's tough to stand by such a team as an analyst of the sport.

Yet at the end of the day, it is evident that the Philadelphia Eagles need this win over the Washington Redskins in Week 6 and understand the importance of a stage like the one that will be present Sunday.

The understanding of the significance of a win doesn't give these Eagles victory by any means, yet the talent on this team has underachieved and is due for a breakout game this season.

Who could have even began to predict that the acquisitions of Vince Young, Rodgers-Cromartie, and Nnamdi would have the Philadelphia Eagles trying to dig themselves out of a four-game slump. Not to mention, Michael Vick entered the season on a fat, new contract that many would think would be incentive for the guy to step up his game. Go figure.

In this matchup against the 3-1 Washington Redskins, one of the main matchups will be that of which will take place when the Eagles have possession of the football. The Redskins defensive line is arguably one of the best the league has to offer, who go up against an Eagles offensive line that has been up and down for the most part this season. Protection for Vick will be key in opening up passing lanes down the field for Jason Avant and DeSean Jackson.

The other key area where the Eagles have to take advantage, is in their ability to shut down wide receivers with the talent in the secondary. When you have Nnamdi, Rodgers-Cromartie and Asante Samuel playing together, there is a plethora of talent waiting to be used. The three have all proven to be play-makers, yet have not done much to show for it this season.

The Redskins will have one big advantage going into the matchup, as running back Ryan Torain is now healthy and back in the lineup. In his first game back, Torain ran for over 100 yards and a score. The Eagles defensive line will have to do a good job at containing Torain's big runs down the middle and force Grossman to beat them with his arm.

With a quarterback who has thrown five interceptions this season in Grossman, there will be a fair share of opportunities for these talented cornerbacks to take advantage of some poor throws and create turnovers. So far, the three star corners have combined for just two interceptions all season.

To put this into perspective, New England Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork has two of his own on the season.

With a powerful run game and a top-notch defense, the Redskins should have what it takes to beat the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Yet when it's all said and done, Eagles head coach Andy Reid will have this team ready to battle in this critical matchup.

On paper, the Skins are the better squad, yet with this game being a must-win for Philly and with the team boasting as much talent as they do, Vick and the Eagles should get it done on Sunday and move to 2-4 on the season.
