Fantasy Football Week 6 Projections: 6 TD Machines You Must Start

Gary DavenportOct 16, 2011

We're just about ready to kick off the sixth week of the 2011 fantasy football season, and whether you're basking in your own greatness while trying to keep a winning streak going or crying into your Cocoa Puffs while trying to get off a skid, there's an easy way to accomplish your goal.

Stock your starting fantasy lineup with as many players that will score a touchdown this week as possible.

In an effort to help fantasy owners everywhere achieve their goals, here are half a dozen players who, while not the most obvious choices out there, have a better-than-average chance of getting to show off their end-zone dance in Week 6.

1. Colt McCoy: QB, Cleveland Browns (at OAK)

1 of 6

Quarterback Colt McCoy and the Cleveland Browns head West this week to face the Oakland Raiders, where they will attempt to wipe away the stain of a lopsided loss to the Tennessee Titans two weeks ago and get an inconsistent offensive attack that ranks 21st in the National Football League back on track.

The second-year pro from Texas has a solid shot of doing just that Sunday, as the Raiders enter this week's action ranked 29th in the NFL in pass defense and have allowed the third-most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks so far this season.

2. James Starks: RB, Green Bay Packers (vs. STL)

2 of 6

While the undefeated Green Bay Packers have been an offensive juggernaut to this point in the 2011 season, their ground game has been somewhat hit-or-miss, with neither running back James Starks or fellow ball-carrier Ryan Grant rushing for 100 yards in a game.

They've also scored just one touchdown so far this season between the two of them.

However, that should change in Week 6, as Green Bay faces a St. Louis Rams squad that has allowed the third-most fantasy points per game to opposing running backs.

With the Packers likely to gain a big lead, expect Green Bay to pound away on the ground in the second half and for James Starks to notch his second rushing score of the year at Lambeau.

3. Ryan Torain: RB, Washington Redskins (vs. PHI)

3 of 6

Running back Ryan Torain of the Washington Redskins has apparently staked his claim as the new favorite son in head coach Mike Shanahan's backfield in the nation's capital.

The third-year pro will likely be in line for the lion's share of the carries Sunday on the heels of his 135-yard outburst against the St. Louis Rams two weeks ago.

No team in the National Football League has allowed more fantasy points per game to opposing running backs this season than Washington's opponents this week—the Philadelphia Eagles.

Given that the Eagles also rank 30th in the NFL against the run, a second straight solid statistical day would seem to be on tap for Torain.

4. A.J. Green: WR, Cincinnati Bengals (vs. IND)

4 of 6

It didn't take long for rookie wide receiver A.J. Green to develop a rapport with quarterback (and fellow rookie) Andy Dalton in Cincinnati, as the Bengals wideout has already emerged as Dalton's favorite target while hauling in 24 receptions for 402 yards and three touchdowns.

Among the myriad problems facing the Indianapolis Colts is the fact that they are a mediocre 19th in the league in pass defense and have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers.

Green should have little trouble getting open early and often when the Bengals and Colts square off at Paul Brown Stadium Sunday.

5. Santonio Holmes: WR, New York Jets (vs. MIA)

5 of 6

While New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes has been making lots of noise griping publicly about the Jets' offensive-line woes, the sixth-year veteran has been whisper-quiet on the playing field, reeling in only 17 catches for 224 yards and two scores as the Jets lurched to a 2-3 start.

There's a good chance that will change Monday night when the Jets meet the Miami Dolphins, who were already a woeful 31st in the NFL in pass defense, have surrendered the sixth-most fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers this year and may be without their best coverage man in cornerback Vontae Davis this week.

6. Visanthe Shiancoe: TE, Minnesota Vikings (at CHI)

6 of 6

There are a few things in life that you can just count on on a weekly basis.

The Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle will be impossibly hard, Dancing with the Stars will continue to hurtle humanity headlong toward the Apocalypse, and the Chicago Bears defense will struggle to cover opposing tight ends.

That bodes well for Minnesota Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe, who has done next to nothing so far this year but could easily be in for his best game of the season this week.

The Vikings travel to the Windy City to battle the Bears, who are the friendliest fantasy matchup in the league for opposing tight ends.
