WWE: Why Smackdown Is Now the Worst Wrestling Show on TV

Lewis NolanOct 15, 2011

In 2009, Wrestling Observer Newsletter named Smackdown the best wrestling show on TV over its big brother RAW. This was the second time this had happened (the first was in 2002) and it was the highlight of the brand's time on MyNetworkTV.

However, once you are on top of the mountain the only way to go is down, and down it went.

On the first of October in 2010, Smackdown left MyNetworkTV for the SyFy channel and everything went wrong from there. The quality of the show slowly declined over the next seven months before the annual WWE draft teased a revival of the brand (with the drafting of John Cena and Randy Orton) but nothing really happened.

The quality of Smackdown continued to get pushed out of the way in order for RAW to assume it's "rightful place" atop the wrestling world.

The well-being of RAW has always been placed ahead of Smackdown but with the new RAW Supershow it seems as though Smackdown has been totally ignored, except to provide the boring filler that they don't want on RAW.

The latest edition of Smackdown is a perfect example. It was the show that established Smackdown as the second longest weekly episodic TV show (behind RAW of course) and it was one of the most forgettable shows ever.

The Battle Royal (while decent to watch) was stupid and gave us a pointless title match that changed nothing. The Sin Cara angle lives (for whatever reason) and it is seriously starting to piss me off. The divas match just makes it less believable that Kelly could beat Phoenix (and not in the good way). Sheamus vs. Del Rio was decent, but Christian interfering did very little to further the angle between him and Sheamus (they've been doing it for weeks) and the main event was uninteresting and the interference from both Big Show and Cody Rhodes was predictable.

This was supposed to be a milestone Smackdown and this is how it happens? It's just sad.

TNA is heading into it's biggest PPV of the year full of steam and it's shaping up to be a very good one. ROH is now on TV and it's producing its standard high quality wrestling with improved production values. Both of these shows have jumped ahead of the train wreck that Smackdown has become.

Some of you may believe that I am being to hard on Smackdown and that it is just in a rut. This show has gone from the best wrestling show on TV to the worst in only two years and with the level of talent they have (as well as the money) that is an incredible downturn.

If this is what the end of the brand extension (which may or may not happen) has in store for us, I don't want it.
