Week 6 Start 'Em Sit 'Em: Brandon Marshall and 4 WRs You Must Sit

Jim BarndollarOct 14, 2011

If you're looking at starting any of the guys on my list, you probably got burned by them in your draft. They looked to have so much potential heading into the season. Some of them are established veterans with very impressive career numbers and stability, while others have home run capabilities that can carry your team to victory.

This year these players have shown flashes of the playmaking ability you drafted them for but have yet to make a significant impact in the points column. If you're counting on this to be the week that they finally pay off for you, I would exercise caution.

It may be time to hit the waiver wire and look for a better option, or face the consequences.

Santana Moss, WR Washington Redskins

1 of 4

Any time that Rex Grossman is the starting QB, the production of the WR's can experience steep decline at a moments notice. For any history just look at his career with the Chicago Bears. He is usually good for at least a couple of head-scratching throws each game.

Rex has crashed back to Earth after being named the starter before the beginning of the season. In his last three weeks, he has turned the ball over six times, including five interceptions.

His production has also followed suit in those games as he threw for 291 yards in Week 2, then 250 yards and finally 143 yards in a favorable matchup against the Rams in Week 4.

Santana Moss has been his favorite target this year, but has failed to go over 80 yards in any game thus far. His lack of big play ability is directly tied to the shortcomings of Rex Grossman. He has found the end zone twice so far this season. but I don't expect to see Moss celebrating in the end zone this week.

Last season, Moss was limited to three catches for 28 yards and zero TD's against this Eagles team. The Eagles are a solid defense on paper yet have failed to live up to the hype, but that doesn't mean they don't have talent.

With the three blanketeer's of Nnamdi Asomugha, Asante Samuel and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, I just don't see anywhere for Moss to roam. I expect a very quiet day from No. 89 on Sunday.

Percy Harvin, WR Minnesota Vikings

2 of 4

There are not many weeks that Percy Harvin is not on the injury report for one reason or another. This week it's related to his tender ribs that had him as a limited participant in practice on Friday.

Harvin is listed as questionable and is expected to start, but I wouldn't expect too much from him.

Harvin is a slight-build wide receiver with excellent speed and quickness, but he's not yet a pure receiver. In three of his games this year Harvin has pulled in three or less passes. He is capable of off-setting his shortcomings as a wide receiver with end around plays and plays when he lines up in the backfield.

He is an explosive player in a lackluster offense. With Donovan McNabb well past his prime and struggling to crack the 200 yard mark in nearly every game, there are just not enough yards to go around for a big day from a banged-up Harvin.

To add to that, he's facing a Chicago Bears' defense that is hellbent on improvement in the secondary. They were burned by Detroit and Calvin Johnson. However, I expect to see a team with renewed dedication to getting after the QB and McNabb is nowhere near as mobile as he used to be.

One solid hit on those ribs or if his migraines start acting up and you could be left with a very costly goose egg in the points column.

Brandon Marshall, WR Miami Dolphins

3 of 4

Even before Brandon Marshall opened his mouth it was going to be a tough week for him. Now he has fired up a very talented and frustrated defense in the New York Jets.

His starting QB Chad Henne is done for the season after he underwent surgery to repair a separated shoulder. That leaves Matt Moore at the helm to attempt to resurrect any kind of an offense in Miami.

The Dolphins are 0-4. Their only hope for a turnaround this week, may rest on the shoulders of Donald Thomas, if he returns, and Reggie Bush.

Marshall has been his own worst enemy this season, as he has hauled in only 56 percent of the passes intended for him. Lapses in concentration have led to very routine passes hitting the ground after hitting his hands.

If the Dolphins can run the ball against the Jets, they may create some breathing room for Matt Moore and the wide receivers. This is a highly unlikely scenario, though, and with Marshall as the only legitimate option at wide receiver, I expect the Jets to lock him down.

Darrelle Revis is one of the best cover corners in the game and Antonio Cromartie is no slouch. Cromartie is susceptible to the big play against him, but he also makes big plays for his team.

Bottom line is that the Dolphins will be 0-5 after this week and Marshall's numbers will continue to disappoint.

Reggie Wayne, WR Indianapolis Colts

4 of 4

When Peyton Manning went down with injury, the Colts shortcomings were exposed for all to see–and they were many. This team was built around the ability of their future Hall of Fame franchise QB.

With the loss of Manning, wide receiver Reggie Wayne has been left as a star on a struggling offense. The Kerry Collins experiment was a colossal failure, enter Curtis Painter.

Curtis Painter is not a quality starting QB in the NFL. His stats the last two weeks were bloated due to blown coverages and short passes that were turned into big numbers by Pierre Garcon.

Now Painter and the Colts passing offense will face a difficult test in the, ahem, Bengals. That's right, the Bengals are a pretty legitimate team thus far, thanks in large part to a defensive secondary that has been quite stingy.

They currently rank third in the NFL in opponents passing yards.

Starting cornerbacks are Leon Hall and Nate Clements. If Wayne should draw Leon Hall it could be a long day for the Colts wideout. He will surely garner more defensive attention than any other weapon on the Colts offense.

Wayne has less than 80 yards receiving and has been held out of the end zone each of the last four weeks. He is set up to disappoint once again.

Hopefully you can hit the waiver wire and pick up a fill-in for this week, if not, revisit your flex options and see if there's a way to boost the potential scoring. Best of luck fantasy GM's.
