Chicago White Sox: 5 Things Ozzie Guillen Accomplished on the South Side
The Chicago White Sox have turned the page in regards to their manager. After the bad taste wanes a bit from the 2011 season, it will be time to take stock of the Ozzie Guillen era.
Robin Ventura is now manning the dugout, but let's take a quick look back over our collective shoulder to recognize the eight-year circus that was the Ozzie Guillen Experience.
Here are five things Guillen managed while he managed.
1. Guillen Won a World Series
1 of 5Let's not forget that, first and foremost, Guillen helped bring a World Championship to the South Side of Chicago. The 2005 World Series sweep of Houston was the town's first baseball title in 88 years.
2. Guillen Made Two Trips to the Playoffs with Chicago
2 of 5Guillen reached the postseason with the White Sox in 2005 and 2008. That doesn't sound like a big deal at face value, but no White Sox manager has equaled that feat.
Guillen is third in games managed by a White Sox manager behind Jimmy Dykes and Al Lopez. He also is third all-time in wins.
3. Guillen Handled His Pitching Staff
3 of 5Guillen had a great feel for his pitching staff and always seemed to use them effectively.
How much Don Cooper had to do with that will become more apparent as Ventura relies on him early in his tenure.
4. Guillen Used (And Misused) Technology
4 of 5Ah, what could an Ozzie Guillen website have been?
Guillen may get just that in Florida. Despite the White Sox giving the idea a thumbs down, Guillen made notorious use of his Twitter account, as did his progeny.
It won't be the same without some sort of Twitter fire to extinguish.
5. Guillen Wore out His Welcome in Chicago
5 of 5Eight years is a long time to manage in one place, especially for someone who speaks his mind like Guillen does.
Eventually, both Guillen and the White Sox grew weary of the arrangement. Guillen orchestrated his departure, but in the long run, the parting of ways was for the best.
In time, Guillen can visit Chicago to find that the city still holds his many accomplishments in high regard. No matter how things ended, Guillen, the organization and the fans have much to remember fondly about his time served as manager of the team.
