NFL Picks Week 6: Against-the-Spread Quarterback Report
Welcome to the year of the NFL quarterback and Indianapolis Colts star Peyton Manning hasn't even thrown a pass, as six players are currently averaging 300-plus passing yards a game.
That's an amazing statistic, considering not one player finished above that number in 2010.
Since teams have decided to air it out this season, it's important to examine how certain signal-callers perform under certain situations.
Las Vegas oddsmakers have been spot on through five weeks, as favorites are 37-37-3 against the spread this season.
Let's take a look at eight Week 6 quarterbacks from a betting perspective.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buffalo Bills
1 of 8The Buffalo Bills dress up as road underdogs for the second time this season, as everyone remembers the 41-7 blowout they laid on the Kansas City Chiefs when getting 3.5 points.
Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is enjoying a tremendous start to the 2011 season and is 9-6 ATS as a road underdog in this career.
With the current line giving them three points in a visit to MetLife Stadium Sunday, bettors may jump aboard due to the New York Giants failing to cover six consecutive games as a favorite of a field goal or less.
Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears
2 of 8I was left pretty impressed with Jay Cutler's performance on Monday Night Football in a 24-13 loss to the Detroit Lions, as he completed passes under tremendous pressure the entire game.
It was also nice for the Bleacher Report community to score a victory on the under in that contest.
When making your NFL picks this weekend, it's important to factor in Cutler's 6-19-1 ATS record as a favorite.
Chicago is laying three points in hosting the Minnesota Vikings in Week 6.
Colt McCoy, Cleveland Browns
3 of 8I'm simply amazed that the Cleveland Browns have been sent out as favorites in their first four games, but looking back at their schedule, it was certainly justified.
Second-year quarterback Colt McCoy is now getting a full touchdown to work with in visiting Oakland, but he's just 2-6 ATS as an NFL underdog.
Before moving on, one of my favorite angles is playing a team that has been favored consecutively in multiple weeks, but then is sent out as a dog.
Food for thought.
Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
4 of 8Before even thinking about jumping on board the Dallas Cowboys as seven-point underdogs against the New England Patriots, every NFL bettor should watch the "Romo Coaster" clip.
Classic.
With that being said, Tony Romo is 7-5 ATS as a road underdog in his career, while the team is 4-0 ATS when getting 3.5 to 10 points.
I'll be taking a ride on the Lone Star State's newest roller coaster on Sunday.
Matt Schaub, Houston Texans
5 of 8Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub may be running for his life in visiting the Baltimore Ravens, while bettors may be running to the windows to cash in.
He has been a disappointment when getting points during his career, coming into this contest with an 11-17 ATS record as an underdog.
The Texans have been favored in four of five games, but failed to cover the number in a 40-33 road loss to the New Orleans Saints as 3.5-point underdogs.
Some may be scared off of the game due to the line moving from 5.5 to as high as eight in some spots, but that could be a costly mistake.
Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
6 of 8There are very few NFL quarterbacks that professional bettors feel comfortable in playing as road favorites, as I can count them on one hand.
One of those is Drew Brees.
The former Purdue Boilermakers star is a solid 18-11 ATS when favored on an opponent's field, just missing a perfect 2-0 start in that category in last week's failure as a 6.5-point favorite against Carolina in a 30-27 win.
New Orleans is playing a third consecutive game on the road, but the road team is also 13-3 ATS in the last 16 meetings in the Saints-Buccaneers series.
The public believes in him, as the team is drawing over 90 percent of wagers in Las Vegas.
Jason Campbell, Oakland Raiders
7 of 8The Oakland Raiders are seven-point home favorites in hosting the Cleveland Browns, which has many professionals wondering if the oddsmaker is trying to set a trap.
From a handicapping perspective, the team has to be emotionally spent after picking up a 25-20 win over the Houston Texans as 4.5-point road underdogs, which came a day after the passing of owner Al Davis.
Quarterback Jason Campbell has failed miserably in this role, entering with a 8-15-2 ATS record when laying points in his career.
Tread carefully, as I think something is up.
Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
8 of 8The Tampa Bay Buccaneers appear to be in a world of hurt in the quarterback matchup this week, as Josh Freeman is 1-6 ATS as a home underdog in his career.
He has lost both meetings when hosting Drew Brees by a combined score of 69-13 at Raymond James Stadium.
I must point out though, as 90 percent of the wagers have come in on the Saints, the line has actually moved down a half-point.
Interesting.
