WWE Vengeance 2005: Top 5 Moments; Batista vs. Triple H Headlines
Vengeance 2005 was one of the best PPV shows in the last 10 years. Ironically, it happened just two short weeks after One Night Stand, probably the best PPV of the past decade.
It is certainly up for debate, but the fact remains clear: WWE had a great June 2005. Being held in Vegas, the atmosphere was even higher than usual. There were tons of "main event" quality matches here, but only one moment stood above the rest...
5. Lilian Garcia Proposes to Viscera
1 of 5This was just ridiculous. Viscera had spent the last few months trying to date Lilian Garcia, but she had always turned the big man down.
Finally, they seemed to start clicking as a couple. What happened at Vengeance 2005?
Lilian asked Big Vis to marry her...yep, you read that right!
Of course, it did not go as planned. A returning WWE Superstar made his shocking return and broke the couple up. Sorry, but you have to go find this clip to even believe it...
4. Edge and Kane Click Together
2 of 5Edge and Kane have had many matches together. They have fought on Raw, Smackdown and PPV events. I think this particular match is my favorite between the two.
Edge was catching on great as a heel. Kane was the veteran face, and Lita was in the middle (just joining up with Edge). It made for a great feud and an even better bout.
In the end, Kane won (which surprised a lot of people), but Edge would go on to win many of their rematches. My hat goes off to Kane, Edge and Lita on this night!
3. Christian Gets a PPV WWE Title Match
3 of 5Christian was getting over big time in 2004. His momentum carried him into 2005, and he took advantage of all that was given to him.
Calling out Cena multiple times worked wonders for his character (like Miz in 2009). Not only was Cena ready to face Christian, fans were ready for it!
At the same time, Jericho felt overlooked and wanted to make an "impact" on Raw. Of course, that lead to him turning on John Cena, thus turning heel and getting a WWE title match of his own.
The compromise? Cena defending his WWE Championship against both Jericho and Christian.
This was a career resurgence for Jericho, a big moment for Christian, and another great Cena match all rolled into one. Great job to everyone involved in setting this feud up!
2. Triple H Puts over Batista One Last Time
4 of 5Batista defeated Triple H for the World title at WrestleMania 21 in the main event. That sounds great to any fan out there.
At Backlash, Batista once again beat Triple H. This time, it was a little suspect, but a win is a win.
Finally, the two were set to square off inside a Heck on a Deck at Vengeance 2005. Clearly, Triple H was favored, as his past Cell matches speaks for itself. Also, it seemed it was only a matter of time before Batista lost the gold.
Wrong again! Triple H ate the pinfall one more time, put over Batista as a huge player and disappeared from WWE TV for a few months.
This was Batista's time to dominate WWE (along with Cena), and Triple H did everything possible to make him look like a top guy.
Not only was it a great moment, but the match delivered. They never went outside the Cell, but they proved cynics wrong where you can have a great Heck on a Deck match without leaving the structure.
1. HBK vs. Kurt Angle
5 of 5As if this PPV show was not already stacked, WWE decided to add Shawn Michaels vs Kurt Angle. This was the long-awaited rematch from their WrestleMania 21 bout.
Yes, their match at WM21 was better. Yes, these two had many more matches after this. Yes, Angle would leave the company a year later. No, I don't care about any of those points.
If their first match was five stars, than this match was four and a half, if not better. It is always nearly impossible to top the original (of anything), but these two gave it their best shot.
While most will put Triple H/Batista in the number one slot for Vengeance 2005, this match just barely beat them. Angle and Michaels will go down as two of the best in-ring performers the world has ever seen, and on this night, they proved why.
