WWE Vengeance 2011: Cody Rhodes vs Randy Orton Needs to Happen
I hear voices in my head, they talk to me, they understand that Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes need to have a match for Rhodes’ Intercontinental Championship at the next pay-per-view, Vengeance.
The two former stablemates have been going back and forth over the past few weeks, with Cody Rhodes getting the most recent upper hand on Orton.
But this feud dates back to when these wrestlers were in the stable called “Legacy” with Ted DiBiase Jr. When the three of these wrestlers were all supporting each other, they were a force that all held a major title at one time.

Rhodes was one of Orton’s best men in helping him keep his WWE title from such challengers as John Cena, Triple H and anyone else that stepped up to face Orton. However, Orton could see that his young protege was starting to take a form that he once saw himself take.
Just like Orton was the up-and-coming superstar when he was in the stable “Evolution,” the stable leader, Triple H, had to cut him down when he thought that Orton was going to take over Hunter’s spot as the main guy in their group.
But as Orton was cut out of the group by a beat down, Rhodes way out of Legacy was by way of a punt to the head of his Hall of Fame father, “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes.
This spilled over to the pay-per-view, Elimination Chamber, when Rhodes slipped a lead pipe to DiBiase, only for Ted to hit Orton with it and then pinning Randy to eliminate him from the match.
DiBiase and Rhodes split from Orton, challenging him to a Triple-Threat match at WrestleMania XXVI, where the finish saw DiBiase and Rhodes turn on each other, allowing Orton to score the victory with a pin fall on DiBiase.
Now, a year later, and Cody Rhodes is skyrocketing up the WWE ladder as one of the main wrestlers on the SmackDown roster. He’s the current Intercontinental champion, and has made a strong following for himself with his “bagging” of opponents.
The match needs to happen at Vengeance not only to help Cody gain credibility for himself and for the IC title, but because it’s a great story that still needs an ending.
The story shouldn’t have a finish at the next pay-per-view, but should be only another chapter between the two wrestlers.
If anything, the match can set up a great series of bouts that would lead to an epic encounter at WrestleMania XXVIII.
