Brett Favre vs. Randy Moss: Which NFL Free Agent Has More to Offer a Team?

Tony SantorsaOct 12, 2011

2011 is the first season in a long time that has yet to feature Brett Favre and Randy Moss—two of the greatest players to ever play in NFL history.

Favre retired earlier this season, for the umpteenth time, and Moss announced his retirement right around the start of training camp. But we all took their retirements with a grain of salt.

Will Favre or Moss return to football this season? Well, it's already Week 6, and there have yet to be any concrete rumors of either them potentially coming out of retirement—but don't sleep on it.

If Favre or Moss were to come back to football this season, who would have more to offer to an NFL team?

Who Had a Better 2010 Season?

1 of 5

Brett Farve 2010 Stats: 69.9 quarterback rating, 60.6 completion percentage, 2,509 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

Randy Moss 2010 Stats: 28 receptions, 393 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Both players were rather ineffective with their respected teams in 2010. In fact, Favre played only 13 games with the Minnesota Vikings before getting injured and sitting on the bench in favor of Joe Webb. Meanwhile, Randy Moss became the first player in NFL history to be traded two times in a season and was just a mess with the New England Patriots, Minnesota Vikings and the Tennessee Titans.

So, who gets the edge? Well, Favre was pretty awful with the Vikings, as it was embarrassing, and Moss simply was bad, but wasn't completely terrible. I'd give the edge to Moss.

Who Has More Left in the Tank?

2 of 5

Let's put it this way: there's a reason that both Brett Favre and Randy Moss are retired, and there's a reason that no team has reportedly shown interest in either of them.

Favre is a whooping 42 years old, while Moss is 34 years old. To be honest, Favre is way over-the-hill and Moss is definitely pushing it—there could be something left in Moss' tank.

In my opinion, if Moss is motivated, which he could be as he's never won a Super Bowl, he could attempt to squeeze something out, as he'd be playing in a very shortened season.

What Teams Could Use Brett Favre as a Starting Quarterback?

3 of 5

Possible Teams: Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The teams listed above are pretty much the only teams in the entire league where Brett Favre could have a legitimate shot at earning the starting quarterback job.

Would it be realistic for any of these teams to show interest in Favre? Probably not—there has yet to be any real concrete news of any teams having interest in Favre's services.

The teams that could use Favre are teams that aren't in the playoff mix, so why would Favre even want to both coming out of retirement to play for a non-Super Bowl-contending team?

What Teams Could Use Randy Moss?

4 of 5

Possible Teams: Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Seattle Seahawks and the St. Louis Rams.

The list is obviously much longer than Brett Favre's, as Randy Moss is a wide receiver and could be plugged in as a starter much easier than a quarterback could be.

Moss could have an impact on the teams listed above, especially teams with no true go-to wide receiver such as the Bears, Browns, Jaguars, Titans, Seahawks, Raiders and the Rams.

If Moss was thrown on a playoff contender, he'd definitely give it his all to finally win a Super Bowl.

The Verdict: Who Has More to Offer in 2011?

5 of 5

Randy Moss, enough said.

However, let me be clear, I do not believe that either Brett Favre or Randy Moss should come out of retirement. There is a reason why they're retired, and there's a reason why no one reportedly offered them a contract this offseason—their skills have obviously diminished.

Although, when you're comparing the two, you have to give the edge to Moss. Favre is 42 years old and simply looked like an old man last season with Vikings, but Moss was completely dysfunctional with all three teams that he played for a year ago.

If you can get Moss focused, then he could be an impact player in a shortened season—but he would be nowhere the circa 2007 Randy Moss, keep that in mind.
