Terrell Owens Overdose Report: Ex-NFL Star's Alleged Pill Overdose Marks a Trend

Ryan RudnanskyOct 12, 2011

Former NFL star receiver Terrell Owens was reportedly rushed to a Los Angeles area hospital Thursday night after a possible pill overdose.

Owens, who was staying at an apartment in the area, has had an incident like this before. In 2006, he denied reports that he took 35 Vicodin pills in an apparent suicide attempt.

This not only appears to be a trend for Owens, it appears to mark a trend for athletes who have been out of the game even for a short period of time.

How often have we heard of an athlete getting into trouble, one way or another, after football? When an athlete loses football, he seems to lose his livelihood and security blanket all in one.

Owens, who has been attempting to come back to the NFL after going unsigned in the offseason, hasn't exactly had the most pleasant time off. The 37-year-old has been involved in a paternity battle with Melanie Paige Smith after missing $5,000 in child support payments. On top of this, his financial adviser allegedly misappropriated funds and took advantage of him, which Owens outlined to ESPN.

In 2006, Owens denied taking 35 Vicodin, calling the rumors "absurd," but it's hard to prove everyone is out to get you when a pattern is emerging. Frankly, it's hard to prove given all that we have seen from former athletes who have fallen hard since their playing days.

Who knows if Owens will ever find an NFL team to give him a shot, but given that several needy teams didn't approach him in the offseason, and the latest news, we may very well have seen the last of Terrell Owens.

There has been no comment from Owens or his representative since the news broke on TMZ.com. That may be only fitting, because Owens knows there's nothing he can really say anymore.

For a six-time Pro Bowler who was one of the most electric receivers in the game during his time, Owens doesn't even seem like a professional football player anymore, but an individual who doesn't know how to cope with life after football.
