Derek Jeter and Minka Kelly: World Will Resume Spinning When They Make Up

The only thing more annoying than stories of celebrity couples are stories of celebrity couples breaking up. The breakup itself is portrayed as an event of the variety that you must lose sleep over.

So it was when Derek Jeter and Minka Kelly called it quits back in August. The New York Yankees shortstop and TV star had been an item for three years, but the word around the campfire was the relationship was finally finito.

Or is it?

Maybe not, actually. This week, a report came out from the New York Post claiming that Jeter and Kelly are circling a reconcilement. The two met in Miami over the weekend, and were spotted by "spies" (no joke) having a "fun breakfast together."

“They may eventually get back together,” said a source (different from a spy). “This was not some sort of final conversation and meeting between them.”

The convenient timing of this not-so-final conversation is hard to ignore. Jeter and the Yankees just saw their season come to an end at the hands of the Detroit Tigers. He's going to have a lot of free time on his hands in the coming months, and perhaps we can take this secret meeting as a sign that he would prefer to spend it with Kelly—most likely within the confines of the decadent mansion he constructed in Florida.

At least, this would be the logical conclusion to draw here. In times of woe, all men would like nothing more than to retreat to a mansion and embrace the company of one of the world's most beautiful women. It just so happens that Jeter has the wealth and the skills to make it happen.

Jeter and Kelly will have some things to figure out, make no mistake about that. Picking up the pieces after three years together wouldn't necessarily have to be difficult, but he's no doubt seen and heard the reports about Kelly shacking up with Charlie's Angels co-star Ramon Rodriguez. Presumably, Jeter was not a fan.

However, maybe it's true that these reports were greatly exaggerated. It could also be possible that reports of Jeter's and Kelly's breakup were greatly exaggerated. It could very well be that they needed a break, and the break is now over.

If so, well, hallelujah. From what I was able to gather in recent years, they make a good pair. Certainly high-profile, but also delightfully non-controversial. Such celebrity pairings are rare.

Here's hoping this reconcilement is for real. I will sleep safer at night if it is, as will all of us.
