MLB Rumors: Red Sox GM Considers a Move to Chicago as Sides Get Close to a Deal

Jeff ChaseOct 11, 2011

Rumors are swirling around the baseball world that Theo Epstein and the Chicago Cubs are closer than ever to making things happen.

The young Boston Red Sox general manager seems to be moving on from his two-time World Series winning post for a greater challenge in Chicago—the challenge of bringing the first title to the Chicago Cubs since 1908.

The Cubs are in dire need of a new face at general manager, so Epstein was one of their ideal choices.

It is no time to take risks, so experience was key in Tom Ricketts' criteria. He found that in Epstein, so hopefully things will pan out like they did in Boston.

However, that could only happen if Ricketts gave Epstein total control, and from the sound of it, it seems like he has given in. According to the previously cited article in The Boston Herald, Epstein could have even more power in Chicago than he did in Boston.

There is still no official word yet on whether or not a deal has been struck, but it seems like things are definitely getting close. It also isn't official if Epstein's new position will be as the Cubs' general manager. He could be looking at a promotion to team president.

There has been speculation that the Red Sox want something in return, so we should see what the Cubs are willing to give up. They shouldn't give up any major asset, but they should be willing to move something in order to compensate Epstein's current obligation to the Red Sox.

The Red Sox are seeming to spiral out of control, after dismissing their manager Terry Francona a week ago and now could be losing their World Series winning GM. With Epstein, the Red Sox never had a losing season. They made the playoffs in six of their seasons while competing against the Yankees, Rays and the rest of the tough American League.

Nothing is official yet, so stay tuned as this story will likely be developing by the hour. If the Chicago Cubs do officially get Epstein, look for some major moves to be taken within the next few weeks and months.
