Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Week 6: Why You Must Avoid Jonathan Dwyer

Andrea HangstOct 11, 2011

Yes, Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jonathan Dwyer had a breakout performance in his team's 38-17 win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 5. However, that doesn't mean you should rush to add the back to your fantasy roster just yet.

Dwyer had 11 carries for 107 yards and a six-yard reception, while starter Isaac Redman had 15 rushes for 49 yards and three receptions for 12 yards. On the depth chart, though. Dwyer is the No. 4 back—and this isn't likely to change any time soon.

Redman and Dwyer got the starting nods because Rashard Mendenhall and Mewelde Moore were both sidelined with injuries. Once Mendenhall returns—and that could easily be this week—he will return to his starting role, making Redman the likely feature back.

That means that despite his Week 5 success, Dwyer will be relegated to few, or no, carries for the Steelers on a weekly basis moving forward. The best-case scenario for Dwyer would be for the Steelers to move to a more committee-style approach, rotating their remaining three backs in and out of the game as the situation warrants it, while maintaining Mendenhall as the starter.

Either way, Dwyer has practically no fantasy value. His performance in Week 5 was certainly helpful, and it's clearly enough to put him on the fantasy football radar, but it's not likely to repeat itself in Week 6 or any other week this season.

If you add him, you'll never have a reason to start him. Instead, he will take up valuable space on your roster that could be better used to stash away bye-week replacements. Don't be fooled by one impressive performance by an injury replacement—no one on the Steelers roster is losing his spot to the fourth-string back any time soon.
