What Is the Point of NXT for WWE If No One Is Winning?

The Doctor Chris MuellerOct 10, 2011

NXT first premiered in 2010 with the promise that they would find the next breakout star. Emerging from the first season were Wade Barrett, Daniel Bryan, David Otunga and Michael McGillicutty.

Barrett won the inaugural season, but it seems to be Daniel Bryan who is currently on the path to becoming the first NXT graduate to be a World champion.

The second season saw Kaval take home the prize, but after WWE had no plans for him post-NXT he asked for his release. Kaval is one of the few wrestlers who seems to want to be happy more than being successful.

The third and fourth season produced some mediocre talents who have yet to make any kind of real impact in WWE.

Currently NXT is in its fifth season, running for 31 weeks at this point. The show was originally slated for 13 episodes like Seasons 2-4, but the WWE has extended it for lack of a better option.

Why they don't just cancel it and move the two remaining contestants to the main roster or back to FCW is beyond me.

The show is now an online-only program after having lost the deal with Syfy to air it on Tuesdays. With the pros pretty much abandoning the sinking ship of NXT, I have to wonder how long they will let these two athletes continue on a road with no destination.

Other than appearing in some backstage segments, the WWE universe has had no exposure to these guys outside of NXT, which can't be good for their futures.

What WWE should do is just get rid of NXT and make Superstars a whole new brand, separate from Raw and SmackDown. Superstars could serves as the equivalent to the farm leagues in baseball.

Having the younger wrestlers appear only on Superstars would enhance both the show and the people on it.

I am curious to see what will eventually become of NXT, but at this point I am no longer interested in following it due to a lack of a good reason.

If WWE continues with NXT and eventually has a Season 6, I really hope they pull up their sleeves and put some real work into it, because anything less tarnishes the entire quality of WWE as a brand, especially when it is clear that they have given up trying to make it a good show.
