WWE Vengeance 2003: Top 5 Moments from the Show

Justin WatryOct 10, 2011

Vengeance 2003 was the first ever Smackdown exclusive PPV show. Not only that, but it was an event that really has been able to stand the test of time.

Before anyone asks, this show did feature a very good United States Championship match. Sadly, I will not be mentioning that bout, in which Eddie Guerrero won the strap. With that being said, let's get on with the list...

5. Kurt Angle Wins the WWE Title

1 of 5

Yes, this only makes No. 5. Yes, it probably should be ranked higher. No, I am not going to change my opinion.

As great as Angle's return was in the summer of 2003, I just was not feeling his match. Brock Lesnar was defending the WWE title against Angle and Show in a triple threat match. Angle won.

It was a fine match, but nothing stood out, and it was forgotten about the next day. It was a huge moment for everybody involved, but I just wasn't feeling it...

4. Rey/Kidman vs. Haas/Benjamin

2 of 5

This match went nearly 20 minutes. This match was also for the WWE tag team titles.

I remember going into this match thinking Rey and Kidman had no chance of winning. Well, it was such a good clash that the near falls towards the end got more and more intense.

Great, amazing tag team match that sometimes gets lost through history...

3. Smackdown's First PPV

3 of 5

Smackdown debuted on TV in 1999. Smackdown got its first exclusive PPV show in 2003. It took four years to get there, but they did it.

While Raw will forever be the "A show" in the company, Smackdown showed it can more than carry its weight on this night. It was a risky move to have brand only PPV shows, but I think it worked.

2. Zack Gowen vs. Vince McMahon

4 of 5

Vince McMahon fought a wrestler with one leg. Think about that for a second! Was there any chance this match would be good? Well, the doubters were proven wrong.

This was a great 15 minutes match that may have had one of the bloodiest endings I have ever seen in a WWE ring. The video is linked above, but it may be too graphic for some.

All in all, it was a great atmosphere. It was a great bout, and it was a great moment for the history of Vengeance.

1. John Cena vs. Undertaker

5 of 5

I am nearly positive this is the first ever meeting between Undertaker and Cena. Not only that, but they have never had a one on one contest on a PPV again after this.

That is a HUGE moment in WWE history. The bout was built up perfectly, and it even delivered a pretty nice 15 minute match. It was nothing amazing or special, but it was a good match that really set up Cena for great things to come in the future.
