Packers vs. Falcons: Should Green Bay Be Concerned About Offensive Line?

Ryan PhillipsOct 10, 2011

While the Green Bay Packers have raced to a 5-0 record, it hasn't been all roses and sunshine.

The defending Super Bowl champions have suffered several key injuries and now find themselves without long-time left tackle Chad Clifton for what could be a few weeks.

Clifton left last night's 25-14 win over the Atlanta Falcons with what is deemed a hamstring strain, and the 35-year-old could miss several weeks of game action.

With Clifton out, the team's focus immediately shifts to protecting franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is on a tear to open the season. With starting right tackle Bryan Bulaga currently sidelined with a knee injury—though he is expected to return for next week's game against the Rams—the Packers were left without both their tackles during last night's game.

Marshall Newhouse, who had been subbing for Bulaga at right tackle, moved to the left side and performed superbly considering the situation. And rookie Derek Sherrod came in to play right tackle.

Considering that Sherrod played left guard for almost all of training camp and was a left tackle in college, he adapted well.

Luckily for Green Bay, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is mobile enough to escape pressure and can probably survive a few weeks without his blind-side protector. The Packers allowed four sacks last night, and Rodgers was hit eight times.

That simply can't continue—and I don't expect it to, especially if Bulaga is back next week.

For now, the Packers need to focus on getting Clifton healthy. Yes, the offensive line is a concern, but if they can get Bulaga and Clifton back, things will look a whole lot better with Sherrod and Newhouse coming off the bench.

Until then, expect Newhouse to start at left tackle, while Bulaga should return to starting on the right side.
