Week 5 NFL: 5 Things We Learned

Professor BushOct 10, 2011

With just over a month into the NFL season, some things are becoming clear.

1. There will be no wild-card team from the NFC East.

This typically strong division is down this year. One team will stagger towards the division title, but the losses by the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants this week make it clear that only one team from the NFC East will make the playoffs. Whoever that is will most likely get eliminated in the first round.

2. The 49ers are for real.

After two roads wins and a convincing win over the Bucs this week, it is clear that Jim Harbaugh has the San Francisco 49ers ready to compete with the top teams in the league. They will get that chance this week against the Detroit Lions. While an injury to Josh Morgan might be a setback, they should have enough weapons to keep things rolling.

3. An offensive line coach can't run a defense.

Well, everyone except Andy Reid already knew this, but Juan Castillo keeps proving it every week. It seems that the Eagles' defense has players out of position on every play, and those that manage to be in the right place can't make a tackle.

4. Even the Chiefs can look good against the Colts.

The only question here is whether the Indianapolis Colts will win a game this season.

5. The Browns have a tough road ahead of them.

Hopefully the Cleveland Browns have made good use of their bye week. With upcoming trips to Oakland and San Francisco and two remaining games with both the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers, the road is uphill for the rest of their season.
