Philadelphia Eagles & the 5 Worst-Coached Teams in the NFL
Andy Reid and the Philadelphia Eagles are in the beginning of what looks like a nightmare season. The Eagles were deemed the "dream team" and were expected to make a strong run at the Super Bowl. This team spent the offseason adding a lot of talented players.
However, the free agent additions have not helped keep the Eagles out of the NFC East basement. A lot of the problems are because of the play on the field, but there are issues on the sideline too.
Reid is not only the head coach, but the main decision-maker on all player additions. He is responsible for the lack of offensive line depth, below average linebacker play and $100 million Vick contract. He is also responsible for the questionable decision to promote an offensive line coach to defensive coordinator.
Over the years, Andy Reid has been a successful coach, but has also received his fair share of criticism. Many feel that he doesn't have enough offensive balance, thus impacting his team's ability to win football games. Reid is also known for his clock management struggles.
So far this season, a lot of the Eagles' struggles can be linked directly back to Andy Reid.
Worst Coached Teams in the NFL: Indianapolis Colts
1 of 4The Indianapolis Colts coaching staff has been exposed as a unit that is very dependent on Peyton Manning. Of course, it is very difficult to win without your starting quarterback, but the Colts have not even been competitive.
The Colts' issues are not limited to the struggles of the offense, as the defense has been equally disappointing. When teams lose their star players, we find out who is a good coach. The Colts staff has been unable to overcome the loss of just one player.
This also exposed the Colts lack of developing a backup quarterback. They have been spoiled to have a quarterback as durable as Peyton Manning. Now that they need to replace Manning, the Colts have no real option. The fact they brought in Kerry Collins only highlights the lack of player development.
Worst Coached Teams in the NFL: Denver Broncos
2 of 4John Fox has a reputation as a very good head coach. However, he hasn't had a real strong season since his Super Bowl appearance. Fox seems to have an issue finding a quarterback that can avoid turnovers.
He was a part of the Jake Delhome turnover problems and now has seen Kyle Orton fail to protect the football. Orton is known for his ability to avoid turnovers, but has not been able to do so this season.
At some point, the blame needs to fall on the door step of the coaching staff.
Worst Coached Teams in the NFL: Dallas Cowboys
3 of 4The job of an NFL coach is to put his players in the best situation to win. Jason Garrett is not making great decisions, while putting his players in some compromising positions.
The most recent example came last week versus the Detroit Lions. The Cowboys had a double digit second-half lead, but continued to feature a pass heavy attack. This led to several Tony Romo interceptions and a big comeback victory for the Lions.
In that situation, Garrett should have ran the football. This would have helped run down the clock, while also protect protect his banged-up quarterback.
The Dallas Cowboys lost this game because of the poor coaching decisions by Jason Garrett.
Worst Coached Teams in the NFL: Chicago Bears
4 of 4I feel that Lovie Smith is a very good head coach. He has had more than a handful of successful seasons as the Chicago Bears head coach. However, it is the coach's duty to have a stable and good coaching staff.
Lovie Smith is responsible for the loss of Ron Rivera and the hiring of Mike Martz. Ron Rivera was the defensive coordinator several years ago, when the Bears defense was the best in the NFL. However, he and Lovie Smith didn't see eye to eye, and Rivera took a job in San Diego.
The loss of Rivera resulted in a step back for the Chicago Bears defense, as it put more pressure on Smith. Lovie Smith is a great defensive mind but had too much on his plate after Rivera left. He is at fault for this coaching shake-up.
The hire of Mike Martz is something that isn't going to end well. Martz is notorious for running a pass-happy attack, the exact opposite of what Lovie wants to feature. However, Martz was brought in to run the offense.
At one point last season, Smith had to put pressure on Martz to run the football. It seems that the coaching situation in Chicago is a mix of unstable parts.
