Michael Vick: Eagles' Star Knows Breaking QB Rushing Record Isn't Everything

Ryan RudnanskyOct 9, 2011

In the third quarter against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Michael Vick broke the all-time rushing record for a quarterback with a 53-yard dash.

But the Philadelphia Eagles' star knows better than anyone that his legs alone didn't make him the 2010 Comeback Player of the Year.

Vick, who broke former Eagles great Randall Cunningham's record of 4,928 yards with the run, has always been electric on the ground. But what separates this Michael Vick from the Michael Vick who started off with the Atlanta Falcons is that he's become a much better pocket passer.

The Bills defeated the Eagles, 31-24, on Sunday, dropping the Eagles to 1-4 on the season. While Vick rushed five times for 90 yards and completed 65 percent of his throws for 315 yards and two touchdowns, he also threw four interceptions in the game.

Vick has always been a threat on the ground, which is the reason why he has the capability to be the biggest game-changing quarterback in the NFL. Vick completed over 62 percent of his passes for over 3,000 yards, 21 touchdowns and just six interceptions last season, and that is why he led the Eagles to the playoffs.

Vick's legs will always help him, but if he doesn't get back to last season's form, he knows he will be nothing better than the Vick who was more of a running back than a quarterback in Atlanta.

Vick has every reason to celebrate his accomplishment. It's a historic accomplishment. But he also knows that to seize the greatest accomplishment in football, a Super Bowl ring, he needs to set some passing records along the way.

Vick showed us what the complete package looks like last season. The question is, will we ever see Michael Vick the quarterback again?
