Michael Vick: Why Post-Prison Eagles QB Is Just a One-Hit Wonder

Jon DoveOct 9, 2011

The Philadelphia Eagles need to start worrying about the long term future of Michael Vick.  Concerns are arising that Vick might be a one hit wonder, with the rest of the league figuring him out.  As electrifying as Vick is, he still has his share of problems.

After his release from prison, Vick joined the Philadelphia Eagles and was used sparingly on trick plays.  After that first season, Vick was entrusted with the backup quarterback position.  He was expected to provide some depth behind Kevin Kolb, who was the newly appointed quarterback of the future.

However, Kolb's run as the starter didn't last long.  Vick entered the first game of the season after Kolb went down with an injury.  He nearly lead the Eagles to a terrific comeback, but his performance made many feel Vick was ready to be a starter.

Andy Reid agreed and gave Vick the reins of the offense.  We know the rest of the story, as Vick stuffed the stat sheets, while leading the Eagles to a playoff berth.

However, with all that success Vick showed signs of problems.  He appeared to be an improved passer, but still made some poor decisions.  His improved passing abilities may have been over exaggerated.

When Vick was inserted back into the starting lineup, defensive coordinators were only able to reference game tape from his time in Atlanta.  While with the Falcons, Vick was known for his ability to create with his legs.  He actually was able to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season.  That stat shows that Vick ran with the football almost as much as he threw the ball.

So, defensive coordinators were forced to plan for a running quarterback.  However, Vick had made strides as a passer and took opposing defenses by surprise.  It takes time for defenses to adjust to such a unique player.  Vick was still a threat with his legs, but also now had the ability to make plays with his arm.

Vick's success also had a lot to do with the playcalling of Andy Reid and Marty Morningweig.  This was his first opportunity to be used as a pass first quarterback.

Fast forward to this season, Vick has not played very well.  He has struggled with turnovers, while dealing with a ton of pressure.  Vick has already thrown 6 interceptions, his entire total for all of the 2010 season.

Of course, Vick's struggles can be linked to the offensive line play.  However, he is making a lot of bad decisions.  A quarterback is expected to be successful, despite the team's shortcomings.

This season, Vick has not been able to meet expectations.  His injury problems and turnovers are cause for concern.
