Top Five Quarterback Prospects for 2009 NFL Draft (with Five Most Overhyped QBs)

Montgomery WoseleyDec 1, 2008

1. Matthew Stafford Georgia JR

An extremely talented QB coming from a pro-style offense. He has amazing arm strength with great mechanics and pocket presence. He still needs to work on decision making and intermediate accuracy.

NFL comparison: Jay Cutler

2. Sam Bradford Oklahoma SO (RS)

A very poised and cerebral QB. Has the best accuracy in this draft. Also has a quick release, field vision, and mobility. The fact that he operates primarily from shotgun, his inexperience, and the fact he has really been pressured are concerns.

3. Mark Sanchez USC JR

Is having a great first year as a starter. He has good arm strength, mechanics, mobility, and quick release. Could be a the No. 1 pick in 2010. Injuries and lack of experience are concerns.

NFL comparison: Matt Hasselbeck.

4. Nate Davis Ball State JR

The best MAC QB since Ben Roethlisberger. Is the best ball handler and play-action QB in the class. Also has great touch and mobility.

5. Josh Freeman Kansas State JR

Great size and arm strength and can buy time with feet. Played in a pro-style offense. Accuracy and decision-making need improvements.

Most overhyped

5. Colt Mccoy JR Texas

Is probably the best college QB right now. But, any talks off first round with McCoy are absurd. He lacks arm strength and plays in a offense with quick passes that doesn't resemble anything like a pro offense. He is a third or fourth-round pick.

4. Curtis Painter SR Purdue

Came into the season as the a lot of people's No. 1 ranked QB prospect. He has absolutely struggled this year. Should have been considered a fourth rounder at best to start the season, since he lacks arm strength and plays in a spread.

3. Graham Harrel SR Texas Tech

He is the best QB prospect to come out of Texas Tech. That is not saying much. It is a gimmicky offense that doesn't prepare quarterbacks for the NFL. Anyone remember Kliff Kingsbury, B.J Symons, and Sonny Cumbie?

2. Pat White SR West Virginia

It is absurd anyone thinks he can be an NFL QB. He is too small to play QB, he has nowhere near the minimal arm strength for an NFL QB, comes from a gimmicky offense, and has bad footwork and mechanics.

He doesn't have the size or arm strength of Brad Smith or Michael Robinson, who both don't play QB in the NFL. In good news, he will make a good receiver in the NFL.

1. Tim Tebow JR Florida

One of the best college players I ever seen. He has a few issues for the NFL. Plays in the same offense that produced Alex Smith (Alex Smith's mechanics, footwork, and release was a lot better).

His release is slower than Andre Woodson's, who fell to the sixth round because of it. His footwork and touch is horrible. His speed will be neutralised on the NFL level. If you fix all of those problems, you might have a good QB.
