Chiefs vs. Colts: Why Todd Haley Deserves to be Fired if Kansas City Doesn't Win

Farzin VousoughianOct 5, 2011

A win is a win, and that is what the Chiefs earned on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings to snap a five-game losing streak dating back to last season.

However, let's keep in mind that the Chiefs are 1-3 and no one is sold on this team yet. Even with the injuries that have occurred this season, there is still no excuse for the Chiefs to be in the position that they are in. Beating the winless Vikings was not a quality win. It proves that for now, the Chiefs are not the worst team in football.

The Chiefs prepare to take on a winless team for the second consecutive week. This time, it will be against the Indianapolis Colts.

If the Chiefs fall in this game, it would be hard to imagine Todd Haley returning the following week as a head coach.

Not only would this loss hurt him and his job security, but it would pile on with the many issues Haley has dealt with since becoming the head coach in 2009.

Haley Has Had Four Offensive Coordinators in Three Years, Including Himself

1 of 5

Chiefs fans have continuously defended Matt Cassel for his slow progress due to having a new offensive coordinator every year. Even though that is a poor excuse to give to a quarterback, let's go with it for now.

You can blame Haley for having four different offensive coordinators. The fact is, Haley did not have an easy time getting along with Chan Gailey and Charlie Weis.

Haley relieved Gailey of his duties as an offensive coordinator during the 2009 preseason. Haley made himself the offensive coordinator and gave himself a lot of responsibilities to deal with as a rookie head coach.

Haley and Weis did not get along in 2010, and it was rumored that Haley took over as the play caller once it was announced that Weis was leaving the Chiefs after the season to become the offensive coordinator for the University of Florida.

Although Weis said he wanted to join his son, who was going to attend the University of Florida and be a student assistant on the football team, no one should be fooled that it gave Weis a reason to leave Haley.

It is fair to question if Bill Muir will last more than a season as the Chiefs offensive coordinator after seeing what Haley has gone through so far.

Haley Has an Unusual Relationship with the Coaching Staff and Players

Haley was questioned when Brian Waters claimed that Haley and general manager Scott Pioli had said something during the 2009 offseason that he took offense to. Waters was greatly offended by the comments he received, so much so, that he decided to skip voluntary OTAs and denied media interviews until the regular season finale.

In other cases, such as this past week, Haley and Cassel have been the center of attention in Kansas City after an ugly altercation took place in the second quarter against the Vikings with both Cassel and Haley spewing a few words at each other.

Assistant coach Maurice Carthon once approached Haley during a game on the sidelines to help discuss an issue with a player. The cameras caught Haley telling Carthon to leave in a barbaric manner.

Haley's verbal communication has been far from clean and you can read it in his lips when he communicates with someone on the sidelines with him.

Cursing and getting your players fired up is one thing, but it is another to repeatedly use unnecessary profanity. While every coach has cursed at his player before, coaches, like Haley, need to be aware that cursing too much may not be good to get the point across, and it will only give him a bad name.

Altercation with Other Head Coaches

Haley received a lot of heat last season for denying former Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels' handshake following a 49-29 loss. Haley dodged questions from the media as to why he refused to shake hands with McDaniels, but it is speculated that he felt McDaniels ran up the scoreboard.

Haley had a similar incident with Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh this past preseason after a 31-13 loss. The Chiefs went into the fourth quarter with a 13-10 lead. The Ravens backups fired away and put up 21 points in the final quarter to pull away with a comeback win.

If a head coach is upset that his team lost badly, he must accept the fact that he was defeated and congratulate the opposing head coach instead of making scene about it and coming off as an immature person at midfield.

It is bad enough when Haley has a hard time getting along with the people on his own team. Haley wagging his finger at other head coaches gives him and the Chiefs organization a bad image.

Nasty Rumors from Fans

4 of 5

Haley has had to deal with being accused of flipping off a fan following the final home game of the 2009 season. There is no evidence of Haley doing this, but the fact that a fan went out of his way to claim he did so is bizarre.

Fans and the media in Kansas City sided with the fan, as if what he said was the truth.

While not everyone loves the leader, accusing a leader of doing these kinds of things in public without evidence speaks volumes.

Overview

Dick Vermeil and Herm Edwards, the two previous head coaches, never had this much drama surrounding them when they were in Kansas City.

Vermeil and Edwards could comfortably walk around the Country Club Plaza or the Power and Light District in Kansas City and not receive any grief from the fans.

What Haley has had to deal with in his first two seasons as a head coach is unheard of, and it could set the Kansas City Chiefs franchise back.

By winning some games, with the right attitude, his job may be secured.
