Hank Williams Jr.: Country Star's Contribution to MNF Won't Be Missed

Zachary D. RymerOct 3, 2011

"Are you ready for some football?!"

Yeah, we all know that question. It's the question that we invariably are asked before the weekly Monday Night Football game, and none other than Hank Williams, Jr. always asks it.

Not anymore. Williams made some controversial comments during a recent interview on FOX and Friends, and it appears that the folks at ESPN weren't crazy about them. Per the USA Today, the worldwide leader has decided to drop Williams and his raucous song from the opening of MNF.

Here's ESPN's statement on the matter that refers to tonight's contest between the Indianapolis Colts and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

"

While Hank Williams Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize he is closely linked to our company through the opening to Monday Night Football. We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result have decided to pull the open from tonight's telecast.

"

If you're curious about what exactly Williams said that got ESPN all riled up, all you really need to know is that he made it a little too clear that he is not a fan of President Barack Obama and his presidency in general.

We know this because he referred to a recent golf outing between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner (a republican) as being like "Hitler playing golf with (Israeli leader) Benjamin Netanyahu."

As if to put icing on the cake, Williams then referred to Obama and Vice President Joe Biden as "the enemy."

Now, I'm going to be honest here. I don't follow politics very closely, nor am I an authority on current political events. All I really know is that Obama and Hitler are not quite on par with one another. I also know that "the enemy" should only be used in conjunction with music writers.

So from where I'm sitting, Williams definitely deserved to be punished for his remarks, and booting him from Monday Night Football is appropriate.

You'll also have to excuse me if I feel like celebrating.

There are many crappy songs out there that really get under one's skin, but Williams's MNF theme song is right up there with Journey's "Don't Stop Believing." It was cute at first, but it's gotten more and more irritating with the passing of time.

It got to a point where muting my TV when Williams's MNF intro came on was not enough. I had to either change the channel or turn my TV off entirely. Otherwise, I risked watching MNF with a strong sense of rage beating in my heart.

And now it's gone. Better yet, those of us who can't stand Williams's MNF song have the added satisfaction of knowing it's gone because he embarrassed himself on national television.

Previously, Williams only did that when introducing Monday Night Football.
