NFL Scores Week 4: What Scorelines Were Most Surprising?

Ryan PhillipsOct 2, 2011

Though we're only through Sunday's early games, already a few scores have jumped off the page as being really surprising. Two underdogs have jumped up and bitten big, bad favorites to shock the NFL.

The Cincinnati Bengals held the previously undefeated Buffalo Bills to just 273 total yards. The Bills and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick were putting up 431 yards per game on offense, which was third in the NFL, to go along with also putting up 37.7 points per game, which was tops in the league. The Bengals put a stop to that and racked up 458 yards of total offense in a dramatic 23-20 home win.

The Bengals got a pretty good performance out of rookie quarterback Andy Dalton. The TCU product completed 18 of 36 passes for 298 yards and a touchdown, while he ran for another score. He did throw two interceptions and his quarterback rating checked in at a dismal 64.4. But Dalton led his team when it mattered and positioned them for the winning score, as kicker Mike Nugent split the uprights on a 43-yard field goal as time expired.

The Bengals also got a nice day out of the soon-to-be-suspended Cedric Benson. Benson carried the ball 19 times for 104 yards and provided a spark all afternoon.

With the win the Bengals improved to 2-2, and Dalton gained a ton of confidence, while the Bills fell to 3-1 and have to feel a little shaky with how they followed up their impressive win over the New England Patriots in Week 3.

In the other shocker of the early games, the San Francisco 49ers somehow knocked off the Philadelphia Eagles to improve to 3-1 and send the Eagles to 1-3.

The 49ers allowed Philadelphia to rack up 513 total yards, but three costly turnovers doomed the Eagles, which led 23-3 with 9:30 to go in the third quarter but somehow let the game slip away.

The 49ers entered the game with the NFL's worst offense, averaging just 213.7 yards per game. They exploded for 442 yards on Sunday, thanks to big days from running back Frank Gore and quarterback Alex Smith.

The much-maligned Smith completed 21 of 33 passes for 291 and two touchdowns, giving him a 112.1 quarterback rating. Meanwhile, Gore rushed 15 times for 127 yards and a score.

The Eagles got a big day from a banged-up Michael Vick, who completed 30 of 46 passes for 416 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Vick also rushed eight times for 75 yards.

But Ronnie Brown and Jeremy Maclin both fumbled the ball away for the Eagles and they couldn't figure out how to stop an atrocious San Francisco offense. It really is puzzling how the 49ers were able to rack up so many yards on such a vaunted defense.
