Lions vs. Cowboys: 5 Halftime Adjustments Detroit Must Make

Jeff KneisOct 2, 2011

The Lions come into this matchup against the Cowboys with a perfect 3-0 record. Detroit is one of the hottest teams in the NFL and face an injury-weakened Dallas Cowboys team.

The Lions are the favorite, but the Cowboys have proven that they can gut out wins.

Dallas' offense has looked amazing, and the defense has put a ton of pressure on Matthew Stafford. Stafford has constantly been throwing off his back foot and has missed a lot of open receivers. The Lions need to get their offense on track to get back in the game.

Here are five things Detroit must do in the second half against Dallas:

1. Keep feeding Jahvid Best.

Jahvid Best needs to be a focal point of the Lions' offense today. As he showed on the first offensive play for Detroit, he has tremendous speed and can pick up huge chunks of yards every time he touches the ball.

The Cowboys will likely double or even triple Calvin Johnson, so the Lions will need to show they can run the ball consistently to free up the passing game.

2. Find a way to stop Dez Bryant.

So much for injury questions with Dez Bryant.

Bryant's thigh bruise doesn't appear to be limiting his explosiveness at all, as he looked dominant on the Cowboys' first drive. He will be a key to their offense throughout the game.

The Lions need to force the Cowboys into obvious passing situations and will need to force Romo to find his other WR targets that lack the explosion of Bryant. The Lions should call more defensive plays to give the CBs safety help on Bryant.

3. The defense needs to come up with big plays.

The Lions' 4th-and-1 stop on the goal line was a huge play. With the Cowboys' offense looking to be firing on all cylinders, the defense will need to keep making big plays.

Turnovers will be key to the Lions giving the offense good field position, which will help the Stafford get the offense back on track. Look for Suh to start wearing down the Cowboys' O-line and getting a few shots on Romo.

4. Keep spreading the ball around in the passing game.

Stafford needs to keep finding different targets in the passing game.

The offense moved the ball as Stafford found a variety of different receivers. Getting Calvin Johnson involved is a must and can open up other receivers with the Cowboys' defense focused on the big-play WR.

Stafford will also need to come into the second half with much more accuracy on his throws. He was very inconsistent and missed a few open receivers.

5. Limit mistakes.

The early interception and badly-timed penalties are killing any drives the Lions' offense has put together. The Cowboys' pass-rush is too good for the Lions to keep having to call pass plays in 2nd and 3rd-and-long situations.

The Cowboys are pinning the Lions back deep in their own territory, which is causing the Lions to have to drive a long way to get into scoring position. The Lions' offense is also putting a ton of pressure on the defense to constantly defend a short field.
