MLB Playoffs 2011: Rain Is Blessing in Disguise for Detroit Tigers

Kyle VassaloOct 1, 2011

The suspension of Game 1 of the New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers due to rain is actually a blessing in disguise for the Tigers.

While it would have been a great pitcher's duel and the Tigers could have very well come away with a win, they no longer have to see C.C. Sabathia in Game 1 at Yankee stadium.

Justin Verlander obviously gives them their best shot at winning, but the odd bullpen shuffle that is about to ensue is a chess game that gives the Tigers the edge.

The Tigers have the edge as far as depth in their rotation is concerned. There is a chance we'll see both pitchers again at some point, but the Tigers have a shot at getting a jump on the Yankees with Sabathia off the mound.

Nobody wanted to see this game be suspended, but at this point it looks like it's in the best interest of the Tigers. If Sabathia and Verlander square off again in Game 3, there is a good chance the Tigers will have the momentum heading into that game.

There is also a chance that Sabathia won't play again, as his return has not been confirmed. Essentially, they may have gotten rid of the Yankees' ace without acquiring a loss.

This means the Yankees will likely find themselves outmatched in nearly every pitching matchup in this series. That's not a recipe for success and making it out of the ALDS is going to be a huge challenge for a team that could be considered the AL favorites at this point.

The game was put on hold because nobody wanted to see a game of that magnitude decided by weather conditions. Ironically, calling the game may ultimately shift the power in the series to the Tigers.
